We invite writers age 12 to 18 across Canada to share their voices in defense of intellectual freedom. I'm so excited to share the cover of my next book- my first MG novel in 10 years! THE BOOK OF JUPITER is the story of Ara, a girl realizing she has grown up in a cult and that much of what she has been taught is a lie. The gorgeous cover art is by Risa Hugo. Coming June 2, from Kids Can Press.

My mom made this panel of the AIDS Memorial quilt for nine of her friends who died. Kenny was my beautiful, funny friend and roommate; he died in 1990 and I still think of him so often. Silence = Death.

Just turned in the final (I think) edits on Pride Puppy Countdown, and I am so excited for this book. Cannot WAIT to see what illustrator @whatwouldjuliedraw.bsky.social draws! This whole project makes me happy and I know so many kids who are going to love it.

We were chatting daily to keep on top of the latest developments and for much needed moral support. The case was incredibly stressful and a little traumatic for both of us. We met up for drinks one evening and what started as a joke- making another book together- began taking shape. Were we actually serious?! (Sorry, kids; your Minister of Education thinks you are stupid babies.) John and Mary were both very, very good children. They never picked their noses or had bowel movements or zits. They grew up and married each other, and produced five perfect children without ever having sex. Although they claimed to be Christian, they paid no attention to what Jesus actually said about the poor and the Good Samaritan and forgiving your enemies and such; instead, they practised selfish rapacious capitalism, because they worshipped Ayn Rand. (Though they ignored the scene in The Fountainhead where “welcomed rape” is advocated, because who wants to dwell, and also that would have involved sex and would de facto be pornographic. Well, it kind of is, eh?) Oh, and they never died, because who wants to dwell on, you know, death and corpses and yuk? So they lived happily ever after. But while they were doing that The Handmaid’s Tale came true and Danielle Smith found herself with a nice new blue dress but no job. The end.

My kid and I made a menu for a Redwall feast when we were reading these books together! Basil Stag Hare's leek soup is still a favorite ten years later.

Authors & Illustrators Speak Out Against Book Bans In Alberta. Text reads: Canadian Authors and Illustrators Against Book Bans, a group of published writers and artists from across the country, strongly opposes the recent efforts by the Alberta government to ban books in the province’s schools. We support the rights of young people to read freely and to access books in which they may see people like themselves and their families on the page, and in which they may learn about the lives of other people different from themselves. We support their right to find the stories they need and the information they seek. Slide 2: Text reads: The reality is that young people have access to many kinds of media and various forums for content. Books, especially now, are a crucially important and appropriate way for them to learn about all topics, including sex and sexuality, as they develop their understanding of the world and their own relationships and identities. In the context of rising censorship and anti-2SLGBTQIA+ backlash in the United States, we are particularly distressed to see a Canadian province adopting the same book banning playbook pushed by far-right American groups like Moms for Liberty. We are concerned that the new guidelines will be used to target 2SLGBTQIA+ books, a practice that not only censors books and undermines student access, but also sends a harmful message that stigmatizes 2SLGBTQIA+ people and suggests that stories about them do not belong in schools. Yesterday- the day after the ruling on Mahmoud v Taylor- @whatwouldjuliedraw.bsky.social and I read Pride Puppy to kids and families at a Queer and Trans Farmers Market. It was a good reminder of why we wrote the book. So much queer joy. Happy Pride, friends.
