My favorite chorus from The Messiah is WE. ALL. LIKE. SHEEP!

Because, of course, we do.

Have just started in on Jon Hickey’s debut novel featuring a scrappy political campaign on a Midwestern Indian reservation. Hard-boiled, just the right dash of cynicism and comedy.

Got a Christmas CD out to play this morning, and have been playing vinyl so exclusively the last few years that, truly, I checked to make sure I was starting with Side One.

Damn it, another #solstice around the corner, and I’ve put off buying a live young goat.

1/2) Just changed the old smoke alarm for a new, talking alarm. And now I want to set something up for holiday dinners with relatives that will go off whenever some anti-science/anti-migrant/racist/anti-trans or -gay BS is spouted:

Can anyone tell me when the NYT Book Review quit publishing book reviews? Plenty of lists, obituaries of authors, features on literary subjects . . . I found two reviews about four scrolls down. If anyone’s got recommendations for another place to find actual reviews, much obliged.

1/2) Does anyone but me find GN’s style tiresome? I’m a big fan of satire to take down a tyrant, but Newsom’s just so playground. Beating Trump at his own game in middle school taunts.

O primeiro livro que estou a tentar ler em português. Prosa bela, lírica, simples.

For English language readers, there’s “You Died On Me,” which this book is a kind of sequel to, 20 yrs later.

Let’s bring up the Christmas lights!!

In which I begin my exploration into the bowels of the house, a dig into a tomb untouched in 24 months, redolent of rat, and strewn with the bones of lesser men.

Our insurance agent’s trying to sell us on an umbrella policy. Told him, Look bub, I don’t know what kind of pricey accessories you’ve got hanging at home by _your_ door, but I got my umbrella for eleven bucks at Cole Hardware, and I think I’ll just keep living on the edge for now, thanks very much.

Finally got my ancestry DNA results. Turns out I’m about 18% Swedenborgian, and, probably through a paternal great grandmother, equal amounts of American Staffordshire and chert.

This Lisbon neighborhood we’re staying in is great, except for the iron monger. There is literally an iron monger right across the street. Mongering iron. At this very moment. He is mongering.

Portuguese Halloween Fish. Handed out to trick-or-treaters. When children finish eating one, they get to spread the bones in their parents’ bed as a memento mori. It’s a deeply religious country.
