Those are the picks of the creative works that got me through the year. Whatever 2026 may bring, here's to interesting people making more good things.

Newsletter: Standing Room Only by Amanda Marcotte at Salon ( @amandamarcotte.bsky.social ). One of the best of the indie and/or new-media voices that are confronting what's being done to the USA. Occasionally dives deep into the right's misogyny. Necessary, and always insightful.

Video game: Timberborn by Mechanistry. Still in Early Access on Steam. A pixel-art city-builder, sort of, but your protagonists are post-apocalyptic beavers. Lots of interesting challenges to manage water in three dimensions.

TV show: Riot Women by Sally Wainwright. Angry, celebratory, tragic, messy, joyous. With some excellent performances, especially from Rosalie Craig and Joanna Scanlan. Rocks.

Album: Monument by Shriekback ( @shriekback.bsky.social ). Mostly just Barry Andrews these days, but his songwriting is as good as ever. Lyrically dense – much concerned with legacies and anhedonia, this time – but always with a funky punchiness. Hooray for crowdfunding!

Fiction book(s): the Final Architecture trilogy by Adrian Tchaikovsky ( @aptshadow.bsky.social ). Properly gripping all the way through. Presents a version of the universe both utterly fantastical and believable. Big-scale space opera with metaphysics.

Non-fiction book: A City on Mars by Kelly and Zach Weinersmith ( @weinersmith.bsky.social & @zachweinersmith.bsky.social ). Highly informative how very difficult extra-terrestrial settlements would be, and about how little we know about how to solve some critical challenges. Also, very funny.

Film: Everything Everywhere All at Once by Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (from 2022, but I didn't see it until this year). Astonishing. There's just so much going on in this. It's crazy, unashamedly so, but also has a real heart. Michelle Yeoh is excellent.
