It's Friday! Though I'm not sure how, 'cause yesterday was surely Saturday, wasn't it? Never mind, we're staying in, with Friday-at-home #cocktails . Today we've got blue champagne*. Cheers! And happy new year!

Last year at this time, I posted a thread of a few of my favourite human-made things from the past year. Just a little celebration of some good stuff, in a world that needs good stuff. Doing it again this year, for the same reason.

I think there's a lot of wisdom here
It's New Year, so time to look back and forward. These are 10 things I think we need to recognise in 2026. It’s a response to what I think are profoundly damaging mistaken assumptions I’ve heard and read from practitioners, journalists, and analysts in 2025. Warning: very long🧵

This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write."

A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption.

B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

It's Boxing Day, and also Friday. We were out being sociable and familial yesterday, and so today, of course, we're staying in - with Friday-at-home #cocktails ! These are French 77's. Cheers!

Watch software developers. I mean *really* watch them.

When they say they spent an hour "writing code", they've actually spent most of that hour *reading* code and *thinking* about it.

Wanna boost your dev productivity?

* Write code that's easier to understand
* Get better at understanding code

Down, down, down into the darkness of the grave
Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.
I know. But I do not approve. And I am not resigned.

We didn't do Friday-at-home #cocktails yesterday, because reasons - but never fear! We can do Saturday-at-home just as well. So tonight we're having margaritas. Cheers!

If you value independent, quirky, interesting, uncommercial music, supporting Daylight Music - and attending it! - is hugely worthwhile.

Reading this, it becomes clear: everything that made this the best of the Indy films was added by Stoppard
Nine years ago Mike Fitzgerald wrote up an extraordinarily fascinating breakdown of the differences between the Tom Stoppard shooting script and the original Jeffrey Boam draft of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
