No big deal, but the Alberta government just increased the fee to submit a citizen initiated petition from $500 to $25, 000. After the separatism initiative was approved, but before Corb Lund's coal mining petition gets re-approved. No political shenanigans going on here.

Every day, I get letters demanding that the federal govt or the GG or the LG “do something” to change or save Alberta. But the only people who can “fix” Alberta are Albertans. There is no magic constitutional genie. The responsibility is on all of us.
The UCP has made 2025 one of the darkest years for Alberta’s democracy.

Albertans can turn on the lights in 2026.

By simply being Albertan.

Let me explain. 🧵 open.substack.com/pub/drjaredw...

Other places tried “enhanced” licences and walked away over cost and low value. Without clear benefits and strong safeguards, this looks like “risk stacking” — more data on more cards seen by more people — and a premier-knows-best, performative style of policymaking. It won't last.

I took the Alberta Speed Limit survey and found it to be another biased survey similar to the Alberta Next and the one on keeping daylight savings time. Another meaningless distraction for a populist government.
Have you seen the survey? It's similar to the Alberta Next surveys, in that it asks what you like about raising the speed limit yet there is no specific comment box to explain why you think it's a bad idea.

At some point, school boards, the ATA, parents, etc. are going to have to face up to the fact that the UCP is dead set on ending public education, not improve it.

We need to judge the UCP by their actions, not their words.

It will be interesting to see how overriding charter rights, forcing a rejected labour deal on workers, and threatening substantial fines will impact Alberta's plan to add and recruit 3,000 new teachers over the next 3 years.

Remember when Danielle Smith condemned the "arrogance" of a government for passing laws in a matter of days?

Now she's rammed through a law stripping teachers' charter rights in a single day.

Seems the "democratic process" no longer matters to her now that she's in power.

Danielle Smith is using the notwithstanding clause to protect herself while crushing individuals' Charter rights.

That’s not freedom, that’s cowardice.

And Albertans won’t stand for it.

It is a mistake to shrug this off as simply "getting teachers back to work" or "getting kids back in the classroom." While that is certainly the government's justification, the implications of what the government just did are far more troubling than solving this (extremely) complex issue.

In short, the Smith government has virtually destroyed meaningful collective bargaining in the province. Has done nothing to protect public education (arguably making it worse) has shielded itself from legal accountability and has reinforced an authoritarian approach to workers and work in AB.

Best news I've heard in a long while, a breath of fresh air to counteract the horrors perpetrated by the UCP. Canada is such a great country despite its faults.
Today, I submitted 456,365 Albertans’ signatures to Elections Alberta, petitioning the Premier to do the right thing, avoid a divisive and economically harmful referendum, and allow MLAs to vote and reaffirm that Alberta’s future is in Canada.🇨🇦

Let's be clear about what happened today.

Premier Smith introduced a bill to strip Albertans of Charter rights,

denied MLAs the opportunity to debate it and the courts the ability to scrutinize it,

and did all of this from her seat on a jet to Saudi Arabia.
The UCP government has invoked time allocation and on a bill removing Albertans' Charter rights.

And they're using the notwithstanding clause to do it.

Here's why that is a dangerous precedent. And why real conservatives need to stand up against it.

Bitter sweet… There are no more #ForeverCanadian petition signing locations. We are now gathering all petitions and tabulating the results.

Tomorrow, at Elections Alberta, we will announce the number. But it’s not only about the number. We built a movement, a community of hope.

Was even asked if I wanted Moderna or Pfizer.

It’s unconscionable that we can’t get this same level of service in Alberta.

Alberta’s $88-Billion Cleanup Scam:The UCP Plans to Stick You With Big Oil’s Trash
Danielle Smith’s so-called “Mature Assets Strategy” isn’t an energy plan — it’s a bailout. Behind bureaucratic language like “backstopping” hides a simple truth: the UCP wants Albertans to pay for Big Oil’s mess.
