What do sesame seeds tell us about the environmental histories of the African Diaspora? How does a historian know where to start? It’s all a question of process.

My latest essay "Sesame Plots" with @sciencehistory.org's Distillations Magazine is out! www.sciencehistory.org/stories/maga...

Do not assume that everything they set out to do is inevitable. They have been successfully fought on multiple fronts, from courtroom wins that have actually stuck to city and state governments that haven't backed down, to activists in the streets organizing against their violence.

teaching histories of science and technology can feel so defeating. Even from the decolonial perspectives that highlight black and indigenous perspectives, science and technology history privileges European histories and European epistemologies in so many ways. It's tiring and kind of boring.

Sometimes I feel like I learn more teaching than researching. I've read so many articles today to write next week's articles.

Some traffic stops in D.C. are turning into a deportation pipeline. This video investigation, published in partnership with @evidentmedia.org and @bellingcat.com shows just how MPD is collaborating with ICE:

Next week is going to be a big one from Trump's takeover of D.C.:
🚔 The 30-days of his commandeering of MPD is up. That means Congress needs to extend it, or control comes back to D.C.
📄 The GOP is teeing up bills that could take a huge bite out of D.C.'s home rule.

This week in the D.C. takeover: What comes next?
Trump may be giving up his control of MPD, but Congress wants way more control over the District.

Food-sharing apps that connect customers to discounted leftovers are a great way to reduce food waste, but this week on Possibly we're zooming out and looking at the data. When customers use these apps, how much do they end up helping the environment?

Thank you!! It hit me a few months ago, that going to culinary school in Mexico City is a dream of mine.
roguechieftan.bsky.social
In the distant future: I think I want to do another Fulbright in Mexico City, but at a culinary school instead of a university. I want to take classes but also teach chefs-in-training various histories of food, agriculture, and the African Diaspora in Mexico.

Sandwich guy’s “moment of culinary resistance – he wouldn't be subservient, one could say – has become a symbol of the [DC]’s refusal to accept the situation quietly.”

How a thrown sandwich became a symbol of D.C.’s resistance
In an already surreal moment, Washingtonians have embraced bread puns, sandwich flags, and sub-themed street art as a form of protest.
