31 Days of Horror: The Poughkeepsie Tapes

I'm watching a horror movie everyday this month. I watched The Poughkeepsie Tapes and wrote about why I love it and why I think it's not very good

31 Days of Horror: The Collector (1965)
a surprisingly nuanced and beautiful looking movie about how you'll never win against a man who's setting the rules

yeah i felt like i had to... theres two men who die in the film and they die off screen. I feel like if I had more time I could have dug deeper into it but i think it comes back to my conclusion about the film being oblivious to the cycle it's part of

thank youuu yes i agree! like despite it being intended for a full theatrical release the slight illegality of how it felt for so long made the shoddiness of it feel almost intentional. it being on Amazon Prime somewhat dulls that

a film i wanted to like, didn't, that made me think about disability rights more than it probably wanted me to

31 Days of Horror: The Curse of Frankenstein

I tried again to like a Hammer Horror film, but found instead a strangely dry take on the novel with very little monster or humanity in it

What if we kissed at the HELLRAISER merch photo shoot?
A picture of three models, smiling and posing with a variety of merchandise promoting HELLRAISER. There’s everything from t-shirts and jackets to mugs and duffel bags with the HELLRAISER logo, and Pinhead’s face printed onto them.

that's a good point. that's the thing, I definitely believe people at the time had reason to be upset but the distance makes it so hard to really put myself in that mindset. the context is so important

yeah something that stuck out to me in the essays i read at the time is that it felt like there was an escalating series of events where the NYPD response was so over the top/violent and it made everything more desperate. constant uncaring police violence in the film as in life
rorschachisgay.bsky.social
idk, I find it odd because when you see the film itself... you can argue that friedkin as an outsider cannot depict a really meaningful gay world but i really don't think you can say the film is overtly or really even subtextually homophobic

i do have a feeling, a little bit, that some of the backlash was based around not wanting gay men to be seen as having bad/kinky/deviant sex, or maybe even as having sex at all.
rorschachisgay.bsky.social
people really thought the film would get them killed. that it would incite mass violence. just from featuring BDSM and violence. i think the fact none of them had seen it made it worse because then it was all their own conjured demons of what the film might be
rorschachisgay.bsky.social
like there was a very significant number of gay men who believed if the wider population saw that the leather and BDSM communities existed then gay men would be killed. ive lived through widespread backlash to bad movies but ive never seen it taken as gravely as this film was
