Also, beer's nudging £8 a pint in London and there's still a cost of living crisis. It's not the hours that are keeping people out of the pub.
rosamundi.bsky.social
How will the pubs being open late improve productivity? People will be knackered and hungover.

I spent most of my life with undiagnosed ADHD. Adopting a child would have been a disaster for both of us. I wouldn't have done it, even faced with a higher tax bill for being child-free, but it seems like "adopt a kid or pay more tax" could incentivise some bad outcomes.

I'm going with b) plus create a hole in the country's tax take.
rosamundi.bsky.social
A carve-out for infertile people would require extraordinary nosiness and intrusion on the part of the state. A policy which didn't have such a carve-out would punish people for an accident of physiology. And "your only kid died, here's your tax bill" would see the government burned to the ground.

Or if you didn't meet anyone you wanted to have kids with, or you met them later in life and you'd missed the boat for children. Or you lost in the NHS IVF postcode lottery and couldn't afford private IVF. So many reasons for childlessness, and no reasons to punish people with an extra tax bill.

So if you can't have children, your infertility gets punished with extra taxes? If you didn't meet your partner until later in life, and you decided not to be a single parent earlier, you get punished with extra taxes?

"You're grieving infertility and the children you wanted but will never have? Oh well, here's your tax bill."

And night time can be unreliably dark (light pollution from streetlights, car headlights, wrong phase of the moon, etc) for the scene you want.
rosamundi.bsky.social
Same. I want to give those kids bricks instead.

Is nobody saying "these are your colleagues you're insulting, you pillock?"

Me: it's a nice day, bit cool but I'll open the window and put a jumper on.

My neighbour: you know what, it's been ages since I angle-ground anything.

I'm just baffled by the behaviour of the Conservative Party. At one point, all of the Great Offices of State in the last Tory government were held by non-white people. 1 in 5 (I think) of the current Tory MPs are non-white. Why hasn't Jenrick been told to shut up or get out?
rosamundi.bsky.social
Agree with you there, on both counts.
rosamundi.bsky.social
The cricket test said you were British if you supported the England cricket team. It didn't say that you had to be white as well. Jenrick is going further than Tebbit, to the policies of the National Front.
rosamundi.bsky.social
No, I think Jenrick's comments would be regarded as too racist for the Tory party of the 1980s.
rosamundi.bsky.social
Norman Tebbit's ghost blinks and murmurs "steady on, Jenrick old chap, you're a bit um, err..."

Spot on from @stephenkb.bsky.social. And the other aspect of this nasty turn is the eliding of British ‘culture’ with ‘white British’, which will shock anyone who has watched TV or football, or listened to music, or read a book, or indeed breathed since 1980.

Apart from anything else and not the point I know.

BUT WHO WAS IN GOVERNMENT WHEN THESE REACTORS WEREN'T BEING BUILT?!?!?!?!
sturdyalex.bsky.social
Badenoch: "While Britain was redefining what a woman is, China built five nuclear reactors."

A perfect summary of conservative idiocy. Glorifying authoritarian post-communism for its efficiency while vilifying democracy for seeking nuance and respect.

It is the Right who hate their own countries.

The ones by John Lewis can be hit and miss but if they're full, try the ones by M&S.
