I’m so sorry. That manipulation was hard to watch from outside, and the consequences must be far worse to live with.

Feels like grounds for family asylum.

Here in the US, many parents of trans kids have been forced to move to states where their kids will be safe, welcomed in school, and treated—which is getting harder and harder to guarantee.

Team athetes seemed better prepared for life beyond than the individual competitors.

Best-placed seemed to be the ones coming out of sports with class signals for corporate job connections—the rowing coxes, the sailors.

Coaches had every incentive to insist they focus only on the sport, not on plans beyond.

For every Simone Biles, hundreds more emerge in their 20s/30s, maybe with a bronze in some obscure sport, maybe nothing.

Some seemed like Victorian child sweeps who could no longer fit up the chimneys.

This is the US recipe. You didn’t even need Citizens United to buy influence in Ireland. Irish government is paying to be told what to do.

And I’ve seen a lot of these posts distinguishing between protest and what’s happening in Minneapolis. The subtext feels to me that they're distinguishing the protests and uprisings of 2020 with what's happening now. "We're not protesting, it's something more noble!"

(I probably won’t be able to resist a monthly scroll through my two vital feeds on the state of nonsense: @tressiemcphd.bsky.social and @solomonmissouri.bsky.social.)
