Sooooo, all of this is just swirling in my head for NYCC. On Saturday, I'll have 15 minutes for the Minotaur to meet the judges, get examined up close and personal, and explain how everything was built. Then, the Minotaur will go on stage in the evening and we'll see what happens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I also learned that in contests, you have to know what the audience likes and what the judges like. Sometimes these preferences are at odds with one another. Which to value the most depends on your goals and what makes you the happiest. 🧵

I felt better knowing that I had respect of my peers, which sometimes is more important than winning a contest. After that I worked hard to learn all the other techniques I had neglected in haunt SFX makeup. 🧵

After the contest, the other artists immediately came up to me to ask how I did my work, which shocked me. For me, it was just basic anatomy drawing that I learned in the studio and loved doing on my own. But they had all started with sfx prosthetics, but no formal art training. 🧵

In one contest, I finished up with my team doing my ripped-skin-zombie-design on the model. I turned around and looked at the other teams and realized I totally lost the contest. Everyone else had full prosthetic applications and contact lenses. Mine was just body paint. 🧵

I bombed mainly because I didn't have a grasp on what haunters like. I was coming from my (limited) art school background and love of figure drawing. So I leaned into using the makeup like paint on a canvas. I was still doing horror-style, but it was nearly all body paint with no other sfx tech. 🧵

I have a troubled past with art contests.
I did two relatively high profile haunt makeup contests years ago and one *really stupid* informal contest that I'll talk about some other time.
For the other two, I bombed them so hard. 🧵

Let's start overthinking the NYCC costume contest judging:

My work is crunchy at a 5 inch inspection range.
I work like a haunter, not a cosplayer.
This is my first try at foam armor.
This is my first build book.
I don't record most of my build process.
I make my stuff to wear, not preserve.

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.
