Yeah, I think the very sharp lines of the classic male troll was a big part of their look, and softening those lines didn't do them any favours.

I think you are wrong actually! We got playable Earthen in TWW and it's not as if regular dwarves were ever topping the charts of the most played races. Plus, I feel they have been hinting at the Krokul coming to Azeroth in both the Draenei heritage quest and the Manari unlock quest.
