Dear Rachel, I am writing ahead of the Budget regarding the two-child limit. As a West London MP, nearly 10,000 children in my constituency are impacted by the two-child limit, which prevents their parents from receiving child tax credits and universal credit. This policy, introduced by George Osborne, was driven by a pernicious ideology and cynical politics. The policy has punished families with more than two children and was done to creating a political dividing line after the 2015 election. It has been nearly a decade since this policy was introduced, and we have seen the impact it has had. Research by the Resolution Foundation found that 1.4 million children in low-income families were affected by the limit. Most worryingly, they found that by 2026–2027, the majority of children in large families may be living in relative poverty. As you know, child poverty has a corrosive impact on many other outcomes. Child poverty affects children’s cognitive development, school achievement, and wider life chances. Since the cap does not apply to children born before 2017, its impact grows each year as more and more new families are caught by the cap. I also believe the policy is affecting our wider economy. Poverty, especially housing poverty, is a major driver of low productivity in parts of London. If people face long commutes by bus, cannot get a good night’s sleep, and are exposed to health risks from poor housing, their ability to work or provide care is reduced. Both adult and child poverty drive many other public service costs—in the NHS, adult social care, the criminal justice system, and for local authorities. Research has also shown that families are often unaware of the two-child limit when making decisions about family planning. The policy has failed to reduce family size and has instead made large families poorer. Removing the limit would be a highly effective measure to lift over 300,000 children out of poverty and transform life changes However, I believe the Government must go further. Lifting the two-child limit would have a huge, immediate, and transformative impact on so many children, including the nearly 10,000 in my constituency. It's very bizarre that the UK is one of the few democracies which to my knowledge still imposes religious tests on office holders.

Catholic & Jewish Prime Ministers still aren't allowed to formally advise the Monarch around appointments for the Church.

This is really important chart about the impact that social media algorithms have; I have noticed in the last year more and more constituents emailing me about stories that are completely factually untrue and they often tell me they saw it on facebook, instagram or youtube.

Israel’s plans to transfer control of the Ibrahimi mosque from the Palestinian municipality of Hebron is highly inflammatory & a violation of international law.

I asked the Government to condemn this transfer & to consider sanctions against the Kiryat Arba settlement municipality if this happens.

The use of illegal e-bikes poses huge risks; they break speed limits, are dangerous to both riders & other road users/pedestrians & their batteries cause dangerous fires.

The Labour Party is a moral crusade or it is nothing.

It is for this reason that I have joined over 100 MPs from across the ideological spectrum of our party in opposing the Governments welfare cuts.

I have co-signed an amendment with over 100 other Labour MPs that would stop the welfare reform proposals from becoming law, unless the Government withdraws the reforms as currently drafted. This is not a decision I have taken lightly. I have not broken the Labour whip since Keir became leader and I have supported the Government when they have had to make tough choices. The Governments decision to impose steeping cuts to our social safety net, and to disabled people is not one I can support. I did not come into politics to make people’s lives harder and the reality is that disabled people across the U.K already face an extremely difficult life. These cuts will make it worse. I have heard from so many constituents who oppose this change and who are deeply fearful. The sense of anxiety and fear created has only made this issue worse. A constituent wrote to me and told me that due to a long-term health condition they cannot easily cut vegetables. They use their PIP to buy pre sliced vegetables. Without PIP they would not be able to afford these. I have heard countless other examples of how PIP helps people with day-to-day life; including those who are in work. These cuts will push hundreds of my constituents and hundreds of thousands people across the country into poverty. This in turn will increase the costs facing the NHS, schools and local councils - all of whom have to pick up the slack. Housing costs in West London mean that benefits already fail to cover the cost of renting privately while also covering the basics of daily life and I’m concerned yet more people with be pushed onto the streets. I cannot see the logic in taking money away from the most vulnerable people when we have gone through a decade of low growth, high inflation and a cost of living crisis. Some elements to the government's welfare changes proposals are genuinely good and progressive, including the funding for back-to-work reforms, such as the “right to try”, increased funding to support people into work, and scrapping Work Capability Assessments (WCA). But the changes to the PIP ratings would mean, at present, that someone who can't put their trousers on, who needs help with showering, and who can’t go to the toilet without supervision, is told that they are capable of work - I cannot see how this is fair. I do hope that the government will see the strength of feeling among so many Labour colleagues in Parliament and from across the full spectrum of the party. Numerous select committee chairs, former cabinet ministers, Metro Mayors and others have called for a pause. The Government has not, apparently, assessed the consequences on public services of these changes I hope the Government comes back with proposals to support our most vulnerable constituents. When I first ran for election in 2015 I said that I would always put our local residents first and speak up against injustice. I am concerned that the Government have not been listening to the concerns and issues that backbench MPs have raised, or the political risk that is being carried by ignoring people who have been lifelong supporters of our movement. Harold Wilson said the Labour Party is a moral crusade or nothing. I hope the Government listen to the moral case against these cuts and return to the table.

Today I will be voting for the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

I've received hundreds of letters about this bill & will be responding to all those who've emailed but I wanted to share this short letter explaining why I am voting in favour.

I have received hundreds of messages and I know people have strongly held ethical, moral and practical views on this bill. I will be voting for the Assisted Dying Bill today for three main reasons. Firstly having met with the family members of those who have died in agonising pain I know that the current system is not fair, and leaves a lottery system in place. Those with time and money are able to travel abroad, while others are left here to die in terrible conditions. Secondly I support improving palliative care and dignity at the end of life. However there are some conditions where palliative care alone still leaves people suffering in great pain and robs them of their dignity and freedom.  Thirdly and finally the bill has strong safeguards and legal limits. Assisted dying will only be available to those who have a terminal illness, have less than six months to live and who are fully mentally competent. Despite some misleading reporting assisted dying will not be available for those with dementia, anorexia or other conditions.  I know people locally have strong and mixed views on this reform in the law. This is an issue of conscience for all MPs and one where we have to make our own decision, separate from party politics. My view is that we need to reform the law to give people choice at the end of life.

Really pleased to see more funding for the NHS in the spending review yesterday- this includes an extra £29bn per year for the day to day running of the NHS, £10bn to digitise the NHS & an overall spending rise of 3% a year in real terms for more doctors, more appointments & better care.

Today's announcement of funding for key transport projects is much welcomed.

These announcements strengthen the case for a new rail link between the North & the South-East, and after this question I will be watching the spending review next week with a close eye. 👇

I really enjoyed getting to visit First Bus Garage in Chiswick last week, and to hear more about the contracting process for buses in London (and a chance to talk about my concerns with some local bus routes!)

Buses are so important for rural & non urban areas; they help reduce congestion, help local businesses get more customers & connect communities.

At Transport Questions today I urged the Government to ensure a basic level of services so that everyone can get to school, work and the shops.

The people of Gaza are being deliberately starved

They need full and immediate access to aid.

I called on the Government to demand that that Israel ensures that aid is distributed in full by credible UN agencies and charities- not by private military contractors.

On Tuesday I spoke at the Rail Delivery Group conference about violence against women & girls on transport.

With a 50% rise in the last two years I know that we need to more to tackle VAWG on transport (including trains) & as chair of the Transport Committee this is one of my key priorities.

On Workers' Memorial Day, we remember all those who have lost their lives to work-related illness or injury.

This includes many who worked on our trains, planes and buses.

Key to keeping people safe at work is a strong, organised trade union.

Today's increase in the living wage will give over 200,000 londoners a much needed pay-rise.

As someone who worked hard to make Hounslow Council a living wage employer over a decade ago I know how much of a difference this will make for workers locally.
