So now Gatwick’s 2nd Runway is approved, does this nullify the 2015 Airports Commission report that favoured LHR 3rd Runway over Gatwick 2?

I’m pleased to have nominated @lucympowell.bsky.social for Deputy Leader - here’s why
lucympowell.bsky.social
Labour is at its best when we are clear about whose side we are on, and in whose interests we serve, when our values shine through.

I want us to be clear that our objective is to lift children out of poverty and that will mean we need to lift the 2 child benefit cap www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...
Labour should consider hiking gambling tax to fight child poverty, Powell says
Deputy leadership hopeful Lucy Powell said Gordon Brown's proposal to hike gambling tax to fund axing the two-child benefit limit should get 'careful consideration'

Speaking to Nick Robinson for Political Thinking on why I’m standing to be a full time Deputy Leader - being clear about whose side we are on, being a bridge between the movement & leadership, lifting the two child limit, the atrocities in Gaza and telling a unifying story 👇

It’s one thing to disagree with MPs, but quite another to make threats of death and violence. And the actions of the Tory MP are wholly unacceptable

I want residents to be aware that I have received threats of death and violence directly posted in response to a misleading video recently shared by the MP for Keighley and Ilkley, Robbie Moore.

I loved this debut novel from Hounslow councillor Salman Shaheen. It's beautifully written and you'll never see the twist coming. It's now available for pre-order, and you should absolutely grab yourself a copy: www.amazon.co.uk/Freebourne-N...

Due to the word limit I didn't have space to write in further detail about how important it is that we don't repeat the mistakes that the Biden Administration made- they failed to use their leverage over Israel & I don't want the UK Government to make the same mistake.

I've written in the Hounslow Herald about the suffering in Gaza and repeated my calls for an end to arms sales to Israel, the immediate recognition of the Palestinian State and Israel's lawless action in both Gaza & the West Bank.

A reminder of the poor state of the public realm that Labour inherited.

The prison crisis enabled by the Conservatives (who failed to build enough prisons & cut the services that help prevent crime) ended up costing the taxpayers millions.

Prison system came 'within days of collapse' - and not just once
The pressure on prisons, which Sir Keir Starmer has previously blamed on the Tories, has seen the government decide to release some prisoners early. Longer term solutions include building more jails a...

The innovative Land Fund has enabled us to tackle the housing crisis head-on, starting more than 8,000 new homes five years ahead of schedule.

I’m proud that nearly 6,700 affordable homes at social rent levels were completed last year, which is the highest in a decade.

For all its faults London is a city where you can get a virtually brand new high speed train from Whitechapel to Heathrow, where you can eat from restaurants around the world, visit free museums and galleries, walk along a canal and so much more- there is a reason so many tourists visit.

I must admit I am not a huge fan of the continued attacks on London & the language from some politicians that is creating an image that doesn't exist- I recently went to a West End show after work and while I wasn't wearing a versace necklace I was safe...

As a local councillor during the New Labour years I saw first-hand how central & local government worked together to put record investment into public services that let us fund youth services, retrofit nearly all council homes with new kitchens & roll out Sure Start Centres.

In the Future of Socialism Anthony Crosland rightly said that socialism should be focused not just on exports and pensions, but also on having more cafes, brighter streets, more theatres, murals, public art and the many public goods that make life better.

This paper from the IPPR touches on this.

The more traditional model that we used in the 1990s & early 2000s (when we had a large number of asylum seekers in the UK) worked and saw local councils getting much needed funding- the current system is broken for everyone. 3/3
ruthcadbury.bsky.social
One Christmas time I met a group of asylum seeking women locally who were relying on a local charity to get essentials like baby/toddler food & warm coats/blankets.

The reason why the HO is rightly moving away from the use of hotels is that they're not effective for anyone... 2/3
ruthcadbury.bsky.social
This is an important point of clarification; in one case from a few years ago a hotel was stopped from using their own kitchen to make food for asylum seekers as the contractor wanted to use their own supplier (which was more expensive & provided a much lower quality) 1/3

When I did a story on conditions in migrant hotels, there was a woman who would have to wash the spicy sauce off the pasta - in the sink - because there was no meal suitable for her toddler. She felt like a bad mum who couldn’t feed her own child
