Grey skeletons against grey sky.

Dead leaves, like bits of crumpled tissue paper, cling to branches.

Twig season

The-never-ending-desert-of-winter

And my heart continues beating
In a cold dead world.

Decided to make a poem out of an acceptance letter from tonight:

"Dear Ruth,

you are a piece of work

we accept

Sincerely,
a mag"

Foraged for this bouquet and placed it in a broken vintage pitcher I found at my mom's.

Turned it into a vase for a friend's baby shower yesterday 🩷🌱

Empathy is Poetry.

They both reach into the intangible to touch

an almost truth.

Optimist: The cup is half full

Pessimist: The cup is half empty

Poet: in the cup the water takes / the shape of the cup / which I take into me / leaving an absence / which also takes the shape of cup / and which you, by not being / here, drink up
Optimist: The cup is half full

Pessimist: The cup is half empty

Literary fiction writer: The cup is depressed, is in the middle of a messy divorce, and hasn’t spoken to its father in years
Optimist: The cup is half full

Pessimist: The cup is half empty

Science Fiction Writer: The cup is a crystalline super computer and the liquid is hyperintelligent, they want to know why humanity should be allowed to exist, you have 30 minutes to respond and the answer must be danced by a cat

Friendship as good fortune. Mark Strand was at my house when author/editor's copies of the anthology HISTORY OF HEARTBREAK arrived. In one copy, all the pages were blank. Make it an album of friends, Mark said, and made the first entry in a book I've come to treasure.
