The brutal, *stupid* censorship. The unrestrained wrath. And the moral cowardice of collabo peers! Does circumlocutory allusion make safe or is it illusory refuge? It is a lot of work, and people are LAZY. (NB Martin Brady‘s translation is much better than mine. Mine is too Frenchy)

Like Klemperer’s Encyclopedic style. When I translated LTI 27 years ago for myself, I never thought it would be a *manual*

I’m sad he didn’t wait. If you look back 50 years, five sitting Lieutenant Governors went on to be Governor. I admire the guy, but he really jumped the gun.

My mental map of lard sticks it on the shelf under the Velveeta in the corner of the ShopRite completely diagonally opposite to the front entrance. Beyond the dairy case, even. Bad four color 1950s good housekeeping articles. Oreos I couldn’t eat.

I want to hear an arch description of Watergate salad. (I do a dairy free pistachio ice cream based on pistachio butter, pistachio milk, some guar gum and sunflower lecithin and, yeah, a lot of pistachio essence.)

Really? My code book is 40 years out of date.

I thought it would be like pistachio marzipan, and I ended up with pistachio halvah. The kataifi doesn’t really work? I think you need to conch it and add cocoa butter to improve the texture. Real pistachio butter, with chunks of pistachio and lots of pistachio essence too. That would be good

That’s “Pigtella” Tatellah.

Meat jello as the new bacon? I raise you: lard! Why stop at beef tallow when the white man’s lecker leaf is right there? Lard spreads. Lard cream cookies, like Oreos used to be. Turkey too dry? Lard. Stir fry your lil smokies in it. Put it on your microwave potato, in your tuna salad. Pigtails.

I was getting two guys on that beat: a guy on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake who was rating Trader Joe’s smoked oysters and King Oscar, and this other British expat who was sampling much more expensive stuff with his dog.

so much driving motivation in people in even the slightest position of power, regardless of where they find themselves on the political map, is "i should never have to feel bad, feel regret, feel shame, or otherwise reconsider my decisions" and every choice, policy and personal, falling from there

My joy of Thomas (when reading the books with my sons) was the fruitbat Anglican theology and moral philosophy threaded through all of it.

But we have to nerf everything in our stupid culture.
