“This week, Mellon Leadership Fellow and Nero scholar Lauren Donovan Ginsberg busts the myth of the useless humanist; a falsehood often used to justify cuts to humanities departments and programs today.”

Say it again for those in the back: HUMANITIES USUALLY SUBSIDIZE STEM at most R1s. Yes we have receipts.
jjoque.bsky.social
What an absolutely pathological thing to say when the humanities subsidize the sciences and all the science funding is getting cut to the bone. Like just look at the vaccine stuff and the cancer research that’s disappearing. They hate science as much if not more than the humanities

In which a Yale prof calls for jettisoning humanities to make way for science-only universities.

“scientists… are being punished for the sins of [humanities scholars] because we all live under one roof. I cannot see a compelling reason for our continued cohabitation.”

for the record, nobody on earth is meaner about artists at work in a given medium than other artists in that same medium. critics *love* going to the theater or reading mystery novels or whatever it is they write about, otherwise they'd do something else

Seems like you have to be a couple IRL to play one on Broadway or the West End these days....

I have yet to hear a single vision for the cool, AI-powered future being promoted that sounds interesting or desirable. The fact that I'm told it's inevitable makes me bonkers. It's like I'm being force-fed a shit sandwich.

In a memo to her staff, the New York Times’ culture editor, Sia Michel, reassigned four critics to new roles to “expand” the Times’ cultural coverage “beyond the traditional review.” This is a disservice to readers and art itself, @tnyfrontrow.bsky.social writes.
In Defense of the Traditional Review
Far from being a journalistic relic, as suggested by recent developments at the New York Times, arts criticism is inherently progressive, keeping art honest and pointing toward its future.

Glad my graduate alma mater cut 60 degree programs in subjects that require people to think so that they could offer this. Looking forward to living in a world full of Prompt Engineers.

Sliwa: "Eric Adams is damaged goods… Andrew Cuomo is a creep. Slapping fannies and killing grannies... Everybody likes Curtis Sliwa"

My take: Mamdani should run this as a digital ad targeted to Republicans 😂 keep the opps fragmented!

Another dissent with the very rare (but appropriate here) omission of the word “respect” in connection with the assertion of “dissent.”

Anyone else noticing that service fees on Broadway tickets are no longer flat? The higher price of your seat, the higher the service fee. Disgusting.
