#OnThisDay in 1547, King Henry VIII died aged 55. At his coronation in 1509, the procession included nine children of honour representing the lands over which Henry was king: Anjou, Cornwall, England, France, Gascony, Guyenne, Ireland, Normandy and Wales.

On this day in 1550, Humphrey Arundell and others were executed for leading an army in resistance to an English Book of Prayer, seeking to protect their Catholic faith and Cornish language.

#OnThisDay in 1643, the Cornish Royalist Army routed the Parliamentarians at the Battle of Braddock Down near Boconnoc, securing Cornwall for the King. 1,500 prisoners were taken and 200 Roundheads were slain - the Cornish losing barely a man.

Richard,of the French House of Plantagenet-Angevin, would later build the ‘castle’ at Tintagel, aware of the site’s significance as seat of the Cornish royal line. The site has remained within the Earldom and later Duchy of Cornwall ever since

#OnThisDay in 1357, former confederates of the Penfound family, forced their way into Poundstock church and brutally murdered William de Penfound as he assisted with the service of the Feast of St John the Evangelist. William’s ghost is said to still haunt the church.

#OnThisDay in 1475, the Deputy Sheriff of Cornwall was reminded to arrest Henry Bodrugan and John Beaumond of Bodrugan, John Deviock of Ethy, John Trevanion of Caerhays and John Penfound of Penfound, as they owed a London merchant £100 which they had no intention of paying.

The Great Storm ended on this day in 1703. The people of Stratton in north Cornwall spent £17 repairing the tower of their church, which had been damaged in the storm.

On this day in 1644, the Cornish Royalist Army defeated the Parliamentarians at the Battle of Lostwithiel. It would be the heaviest Parliamentarian defeat of the entire Civil War, with thousands taken prisoner, and thousands more chased out of Cornwall by an angry populace.
