#OnThisDay in 1645, Sir Richard Grenville wrote a letter to Prince Charles, Duke of Cornwall proposing the withdrawal of Kernow from the Civil War by establishing it as a de facto independent polity. 380 years of calls for Cornish devolution! 〓〓

When Kernow last enjoyed a level of autonomy (the Stannary Parliament - last convened in 1753) it was entirely because of our critical mineral industry (Stannary from stannum = tin)

If we are to truly benefit from a renewed mineral industry we MUST again have a level of devolved responsibility.

Today is kept as one of the feasts of St Cuby - a Cornish born saint of royal blood who declined the crown of Cornwall to live as a man of God, building churches at Tregony and Duloe in Kernow 〓〓 He also travelled to Eire 🇮🇪 and Cymru 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 establishing a church on Ynys Gybi.

On this day in 2002, the UK Government officially recognised the Cornish language under Part II of the @coe.int European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

Today, Cornish is the only British Celtic language not protected under Part III of the Charter…for how much longer?

A disaster at Levant Mine near St Just killed 31 men on this day in 1919. The Man Engine - a form of mechanical ladder which brought miners to the surface - broke and plunged down the shaft with many men still on it.

Child poverty is a 'crisis that cannot be ignored'

Coastguards rescue six people “in Cornwall” cut off by tide.

There are many sound reasons why Cornwall should be disaggregated from BBC News coverage of ‘the south west’ - high amongst them is a woeful ignorance of the area - Woolacombe is in Devon.
