This article is part of the Erasmus+ project Complex trajectories: promoting students’ successful trajectories in higher education institutions (face-to-face and online)

University progression is diverse and complex. Policies should support transition to university, academic reorientation, and work–study balance.

Social background matters less once entry grades are controlled, though we find evidence of compensatory advantage for students from highly educated families.
sanchezgelabert.bsky.social
Entry grades are the strongest predictor of academic success. But we also find that women are more likely to follow successful paths (including in STEM fields), while students aged 26+ tend to be more polarized: either they succeed through the optimal route or they drop out.
sanchezgelabert.bsky.social
We analyse the academic trajectories of 30,000+ students entering Catalan universities in 2012–2013, tracked over 7 years.

Six different patterns emerge ranging from the “optimal route” (44%) to various dropout paths (early, stable, or late withdrawal).

Minimalistic mapping with isolines 😍 It shows Europe's average maximum temperature in July. The closer the lines are, the more complex the orography, with large temperature changes in small areas, such as mountain regions. Each step between two thermolines is 2ºC.

Thanks to everybody who chimed in!

I arrived at the conclusion that (1) there's a lot of interesting stuff about interactions and (2) the figure I was looking for does not exist.

So, I made it myself! Here's a simple illustration of how to control for confounding in interactions:>
