Come—it’s next Weds 15th October. Engage with author @profdanhicks.bsky.social
Were I a Grauniad contributor, I’d label the work ‘eminently readable’!
A gem from page 114:
Another dead White mediocre man with letters after his name, an inherited fortune, some made-up landed gentry title, come on. 😂

History won’t be kind to us. We’ve forfeited our humanity. Two years on and the tweet below remains valid. ‘Shame’ is a meagre consolation.
Tweet:

All scholars who've even once used the term
'decolonisation' for the advancement of their careers, please note that now is the time to show solidarity with Palestine. Stand with Palestine.
End all occupations

Colonial-loot museum is hosting an Indian-themed gala. I don't know what's more offensive: normalising engaging with colonial loot -- did the funds dry up -- or 'fancy-dressing up' Indian.

They say there’s hope in poetry. There are no poets, no children here. Come back, poets & children of Gaza.

I’m reminded of Amrita Pritam’s invocation of the poet Waris Shah in ‘Aaj Aakhan Waris Shah Nu’, eliciting his response on the endless murders of Punjabi women at Punjab’s partition in 1947.
Text of poem

Oh Rascal Children Of Gaza
Khaled Juma

Oh rascal children of Gaza,
You who constantly disturbed me with your screams under my window,
You who filled every morning with rush and chaos, You who broke my vase and stole the lonely flower on my balcony,
Come back -
And scream as you want, And break all the vases, Steal all the flowers, Come back,
Just come back...

KiddySmile explaining in French (for those at the back) that ‘essential’ queerness equals ‘non-negotiable solidarity’.
Please don’t command perfection from folks nor ask victims to hold spotless views.

On Yom Kippur many Jewish people in Britain have their phones off to mark the holy day.

As it ends at 723pm, some will hear the tragic Manchester news for the first time.

At that time, please join many of us to send a message of solidarity to British Jews. Thanks Together coalition for proposing.
To everyone in Britain's Jewish Community: you are not alone.

We will not let hate or those who spread it win.

We stand with you.

Had a long-ish workday. Trying to write a paper for next week. Found how I’ll begin it - with an invocation of the definition of enslavement by Saidiya Hartman. She’s definitely one of the most noteworthy academics the world boasts of currently. *Lose Your Mother* is a generous offering.
Cover of Hartman’s Lose Your Mother this fiction of origins. The sting fobruni allowed for no such fiction.
i complained to an expatriate friend living in Accra that I had never felt as much a stranger as I did in Ghana. He muttered, "uh-huh," and then he asked,
, "When you go to Chicago, do you expect black folks there
to welcome you because you're from New York? Well, why should it be any different here?"

who is a slave!
estrangeness
THE MOST UNIVERSAL DEFINITION of the slave is a stranger. Torn from kin and community, exiled from one's country, dishonored and vio-lated, the slave defines the position of the outsider. She is the perpetual outcast, the coerced migrant, the foreigner, the shamefaced child in the lineage. Contrary to popular belief, Africans did not sell their brothers and sisters into slavery. They sold strangers: those outside the web of kin and clan relationships, nonmembers of the polity, foreigners and barbarians at the outskirts of their country, and lawbreakers expelled from soci-ety.

It is preposterous (if not outright racist) to assume that all critical readers are white. Producing literary criticism by eliciting saturated binaries of west/non-west lacks insight. The posturing is insufferable.
Axiom: The world has been totally transformed by four centuries of eurocolonialism.

Italians do it better — never rang so true.
In the wake of arrant moral failure of global north governments, common people mobilised to reach humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel is attempting to block it on Yom Kippur (!!)
