"Poets love birds." So says @sannawani.bsky.social's editor's note ("Marginalia: Cento as Editor’s Note") for our 2025 special issue, Animalia. Did the poets (and the fiction writers and essayists) prove her right? Find out now— the issue is live: ex-puritan.ca/animalia
A cover image for The Ex-Puritan's special issue Animalia, featuring brown, antique-looking text over vintage scientific drawings of animals.

"Did she strive toward success, the way any artist does, only to accidentally strive too far, primed by her personal privilege and positionality?" asks @sannawani.bsky.social in this thought-provoking piece about Chappell Roan, fame, race, and gender.

My friend Lou is visiting from Australia. We do silly things together, like watch Love Island and listen to music. Lou shows me the video for Chappell Roan’s “Casual,” which follows a girl and a merma...

You gave me your heart

Laura Gilpin
The Apple

You gave me your heart
like a polished apple
and being young
I bit into it

letting my teeth
pierce the tight skin
deep into the flesh
while the juices
ran down between
my fingers.

But now I’m not sure
what fruit it is
that I’ve eaten
or from what tree

or why suddenly
neither one of us
is quite as young.

This is the first Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈 we're celebrating on Bluesky, so we *have* to share this excellent story from our Winter 2024 issue here. @sannawani.bsky.social discusses white privilege, the pressure of fame, and Chappell Roan—and we're still so obsessed with this article!

The sun can be a flower.
A bouquet, a forest.
It’s good to be alive in spring.
A pot of bright yellow daisies sits on a porch sill. There is one small black ant climbing through the yellow, and behind it, a bush; a street; a tree. Next to the pot, an ash tray with jade patterns.

three pink roses out front. my cats. my mom.
the beach. midnight drives across town, alone.
catching up with old friends. the final season
of my favorite show. strawberry banana milkshakes.
reading poetry. writing poetry, slipping into bed
after washing my sheets. the pillow i took from a hotel.
hot showers, getting dressed up. staying dressed down.
chicken broth. dragon quest builders 2.
the possibility of an nsync reunion. the possibility
of someday feeling better.

PLEASE SHARE! I am raising funds for a dear friend and member of the literary as well as arts communities.

$5 and $10 goes a long way! Reshares even further! We are just $800 from our goal and my hope is bluesky can take us the rest of the way. 💛💛💛
