I did my best to push back on my book being "trans memoir" as it's about many things, but most of all how my life was formed by labour. I got my first job @ 13. I was a journeyman Glazier @ 21. I wasn't a writer (or a trans) until my 30s. Celebrate Labour Day by reading about labour

This is absolutely a systematic reason working class writers are underrepresented in the field, but we DO exist. We just had to bust our asses and catch a few extremely lucky breaks to wriggle in through the cracks.
The reason there's no working class representation in publishing is because publishing and writing currently pay so badly only people who are already financially stable can afford to do it.
The problem is always, always money.
The problem is always, always money.
My problem with things like these is that working-class writing ends up being literary stories about how dreary it is being working class. They're not interested in examining the working class through the lens of fantasy, for example.
