Figure I should introduce myself eventually! I'm currently a PhD candidate at Melbourne Uni working on dynamic occupancy models - I'm interested in improving the ways we build models and in finding ways to make these tools more accessible for applied ecologists to put into practice. 1/2

I’ve always thought 1970 was a particularly odd baseline - that was the year the US EPA was founded, and just before the DDT ban, so not exactly a high point in bird conservation..

If conservationists work from a compromised baseline, our notions of abundance, scarcity, and ecological wellbeing will keep getting defined downward:
"The researchers show that using the 1970s as a baseline tends to normalize an already severely degraded state."

Bird conservation threatened by shifting baseline syndrome
New research shows that populations of dozens of waterbird and seabird species have been declining for much longer than previously thought in Europe. The article "Shifting the baseline for waterbird a...

Some lovely things on the Aussie #urbanNature scene this week!

First up - the work and creativity of friend-colleague @drkyliesoanes.bsky.social has been beautifully profiled by the ABC.

If you use TikTok or Insta I highly encourage you to add Kylie to your feeds!🌏

One woman's mission to rewild our cities
Kylie Soanes says urban development should not come at the expense of nature and there's no reason why we should not spot a fairy wren on the way to the bus stop.

📣 Hot off the press at #ProcB!

🔍 Our study checked data/code-sharing policies in 275 eco/evo journals and compliance in Proc B (n=2,340) & Ecology Letters (n=571). Policies exist, but clarity and strictness vary, affecting reproducibility.

Check out the graphical abstract for a paper recently published in Ecological Modelling.

I have papers published in Ecological Modelling. Never again, I guess.
A diagram titled "Ecological Network Optimisation" with attractive landscapes and networks and very clear AI-generation artifacts.

Chatting with @lauradee.bsky.social about how many different groups of #causality #ecology folk we have to share papers, code and discussions with, and wouldn't it be nice if we all had a place to interact..... so we made a Causal Ecology slack. So.... if you want to join, DM me and I'll add you! 🌍🧪
