Summer has gone & darkness arrives earlier each evening, the perfect time for ghost stories. Tomorrow at 10pm BBC4 is showing the 1970’s adaptation of The Signalman by Charles Dickens. Here’s an unpublished illustration I made a couple of years back. I love this story, I’d love to illustrate it.
A black fine line pen in a crosshatch technique and rolled printing ink on white paper illustration of a signalman standing at the foot of the steps up to his lonely signalbox. The little house shaped box is situated at the bottom of a steep and dank ravine, big slabs of blasted rock rise up to a wooded area, trees trunks, roots and branches twist up into the darkness. The Signalman stares into the mouth of a dark tunnel, rail tracks run parallel to the signalbox into the tunnel. Another figure stands at the mouth of the tunnel, it is shrouded in low lying mist. The only source of illumination is from the light inside the signalbox and a small glowing lamp above the ghostly figure at the tunnel mouth. Dark, damp, dripping, you can imagine the sound of wind blowing through the tunnel and the isolated ravine, not a place for a party but I’d be happy enough there (I’m odd).

Always had a soft spot for this picture - the woman (and her coat) were perfectly timed and placed :)

Stokksnes #Iceland March 2017
A B&W photo of some pointy mountains with a little snow on them iwth low clouds swirling around the tops. In the foregound is a small pond in some sand dunes reflecting part of the mountains. On a ridge overlooking the sea between the dunes and the mountains is the solhouette of a woman with a long coat.

Yes… I’m pragmatic about these things. If someone else (who might be a man) is around who’s better, quicker etc I’ll let them get on with it. But I’ve a) restarted an oil boiler after an airlock b) changed a car wheel and c) declogged a washing machine without prior experience cos needs must innit.

Thank you! Just about my favourite place I think.

Early autumn Applecross round up
A very dramatic white cloud over the sea towards Skye, lit up by the setting sun. A view of an inlet in the Scottish Highlands fringed with dull orange vegetation. The sky is murky and smeared with rain and the sky is almost a bruised yellow in places. There’s a small dark green tree in the foreground to the left A view of an inlet. The tide is partially out, revealing orangey yellow seaweed. There are dark grey rocks in the foreground. The sky is dull and grey, which is reflected in the flat sea An old sheep’s skull perched on top of the spagnum moss roof of a log store. In the background are two cottages, of which the nearest has a bright red door. There is a dry stone wall beyond the cottages and a hillside in the distance. The sky is cloudy, threatening rain.

I've been messing with the gel plate.

Yeah, 2029's probably optimal. Except it'll be full of people trying to avoid all the people.

Wow, a pound. I mean, 50p isn't bad. Our great Uncle Tom used to give us 10p. But as you say, maybe it was danger money.

Ha, there's a lovely live version they featured on a BBC4 'weather music special' (as they do) a few weeks back which has completely reignited my very deep love for them... www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...

Crikey! That is one corking claim to fame... It's 95 years to the day since the last St Kilda residents were evacuated btw. It's not a date I have seared into my brain or anything, it popped up somewhere earlier.

Wow, don’t get me started on St Kilda… I am not Scottish at all but I don’t feel like I would ever want to live anywhere else. Definitely not England. And the more remote the better (sez she, practically bathed in the glow of Cameron Toll).

I’d actually love to do a gargantuan tour of the Highlands and Islands one day. There’s so much of it I haven’t visited (ie most of it). I might do it for my gap year, which I have just allocated as the year after next.
sarahcoomer.bsky.social
Well I really hope you get there… but that’s the thing with these remote places. Part of the loveliness of them is the hassle it takes to get there. Sort of. That’s actually really badly put but you know what I mean.

Me too especially now I’ve seen that mausoleum. What a thing! Though I’m sure the rest of it is well worth a visit anyway.

I love this photo of the mausoleum on Rum. I’m sorry, I can’t immediately find the name of the photographer.
A Roman/greek style building mostly pillars and a roof. It’s surrounded by hills.

Ooh really… I was just ogling this on Facebook!Working out (utterly pointlessly) how long it would take to get there from Applecross (4 and a half hours if the TWO FERRIES behave themselves)

Fantastical doodlings #illustration
A black and white illustration in the style of an old photograph. Three griffins (yeah, griffins) fly through a fantastical landscape in front of a huge moon.

Noble houndz #internationaldogday
Two black dogs, a small tufty one on the left, whose bright yellow lead crosses the picture from his harness to the wrist of his person (me) taking the picture, and a larger collie cross in profile on the right, both looking noble and dignified. In the background is a sloping rock plateau thing, the sea with a few islands and a distant hillside. The sky is blue and the sun is shining.

‘And I think of the things that matter and I think of the things that don’t’ are my favourite lines from ‘Drug Habit’ by Yo La Tengo which in turn is one of my favourite songs. I sometimes think that every single drawing that I do should be called that.

This week’s washing up view
A view from a square window of a ruined byte , some rocks, the sea and a distant mountain. The evening sky is clear and pale blue fading to pale orange on the horizon.
