Third time lucky! Finally caught up with the stunning pair of Glossy Ibis at Deeping Lakes NR today. Watched the closer one for ages, probing stranded algae for pond snails, preening and generally living its good life...just wonderful!

How exciting - I've never seen this! There are 1985 records from a couple of hectads near The Wash in VC53 but very unlikely to still be there as so much upper marsh is now dominated by Elytrigia atherica...

Another odd hybrid hawthorn found while out with my botanical trainees - thinking this one seems good for Crataegus x macrocarpa (C. laevigata x C.rhipidophylla) - sometimes known as Large-fruited or Crowned Hawthorn. But I'm open to other suggestions!

Juxtaposition of summer and autumn at Bedford Purlieus NNR this week - Common Eyebright still flowering merrily, while a nearby woodland ride was smothered with fallen fruit of Sweet Chestnut, plump and glossy after the hot summer.

A great morning recording at Whisby Nature Park on Monday, where I was delighted to be able to introduce my friend to the diminutive but characterful Smooth Cat's-ear, flowering for the second time this year on acid sandhills - a particular favourite of mine!

A small haul in the Peterborough trap last night, highlights being Rush Veneer, Black Rustic, White Point (so many this year!) and this beautiful Orange Sallow which is our first record since 2013, having recorded it annually from 2009 to 2013.

We had a lovely one last year in the garden trap but nothing yet this year! Hope one arrives at your trap eventually 🙂

It's that time of year when I return to the woodlands, fossicking for fungi among fallen leaves and gnarled stumps.

A few from a late afternoon trip to Southey Wood including my first Wrinkled Peach of the year, False Chanterelle, Felted Twiglet and a woodwart on Roble

There were lots of plants in a field in Bainton last July and it turned up again near Etton last October. It’s often associated with birdseed but can be a contaminant of oilseed and grain.

Always a surprise to see Blue Passionflower in a rural location. This one by may well be a relic from the garden of a now demolished station-master’s house. Milder winters have allowed this species to become established more widely in the UK in recent years.

For #wildflowerhour a selection of wayside plants seen on country walks around the Peterborough area this week - Black Nightshade, Common Mallow, and, more surprisingly, Snapdragon and a host of pink and white Sowbread thriving under an old parish boundary hedge.
