For generations, Indigenous people along the Koyukuk and Kobuk rivers have resisted a copper-mining road proposed across the roadless ancestral lands that sustain their wild food. In 2024, they won again. Now, activists face one of the hardest fights of all. My latest words and art, in Sierra Mag:
Alaskan Tribes and Activists Are Ready to Resist Ambler Road, Again
The proposed route would slash through pristine Indigenous land

It's super gratifying seeing something in solid form after creating it digitally, for free, out of love. Thanks to the reader who felt these words and pictures in her own heart, and ordered two large custom prints.

Holy wow, y'all! I just finished and installed my very first mural! You can find these mountain bluebirds, against a backdrop of the Okanogan Highlands, on the main drag in Tonasket, WA, on the side of the Ziply fiber building!

Excited to finally finally have two works by @sarahmgilman.bsky.social framed and up on my wall! I saw them in @highcountrynews.org, where they accompanied a piece Sarah wrote called Pioneer of Ruin back in 2018. Here is "Eileen in the Desert."
Framed painting on a wall. Wall is peach colored. Frame is beige. Painting has white matting. Painting is a watercolor of a person standing pointing their hat at a collection of rusted and dilapidated buildings and vehicles in the desert, with a deep blue sky above.

Honestly, wouldn't you like to be that little dog in Sarah's backpack? He looks so alert, so comfy, so loved.

Buy Laura's book! I feel privileged to have art alongside her gorgeous prose. Also, that cover! Amazing work, whoever designed it (and listened to Laura's excellent insights and taste regarding the arresting beauty of vintage geologic diagrams.)

For centuries, North American settlers have killed double-crested cormorants, sometimes to protect trees and fish and sometimes for no reason at all.

Managers at the continent's largest and most urban breeding colony, however, have taken a different approach. 🦉🌊🐦
A Wild Home on the Bones of the City
North America’s largest and most urban double-crested cormorant colony shows how people can share space with an unfairly reviled species.

I love cormorants--such wonderfully prehistoric-looking creatures--and I loved this @sarahmgilman.bsky.social story about ours here in Toronto.
