🌹I’m voting @lucympowell.bsky.social for Deputy Leader,
an independent voice who’ll say it like it is, and make sure we win and deliver by listening to all parts of the Labour movement.

I’ve known and worked with Lucy for nearly 15 years now - she’s honest, grounded and focused on us winning.

Birmingham, my home city, is a fantastic city, with fantastic people- a success story. It has its problems, like anywhere. But the obsession the online right has with it is as transparent as it gets.

The Bishop of Birmingham has written to the Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick about his comments about Handsworth

"May the God of Shalom, Salaam, Shanti & Peace, help us flow compassion in our neighbourhoods"

This is an important piece by David Jonathan, Grassroots & Luton Council of Faiths.

Now, more than ever, we must stand with our Jewish and Muslim communities who give so much to our town.

And at home, we must acknowledge the pain of Jewish and Muslim communities who have seen deeply troubling increases in antisemitism & Islamophobia respectively, with fatal consequences as tragically shown in the last week. My thoughts today are with all feeling the pain and trauma of this conflict.

The hostages taken by Hamas have been held for two years and must be released immediately. The bombardment of Gaza, that has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, must end with a ceasefire and move towards long-term peace.

Two years on from the horrific terror attacks of 7th October that resulted in the largest killing of Jewish people since the Holocaust, renewed focus must be placed on peace in the Middle East.

My thoughts are with the victims of the horrendous attack in Crumpsall today, and the whole Jewish community in Manchester and across the UK on Judaism's holiest day, Yom Kippur.

There must never be any place for this sickening violence in our country.

I sincerely hope that those investigating gather enough evidence to call out any act of terrorism - that legislation is about intent not just the pain or damage inflicted.

Our country is better than the division that is being stoked.

If anyone has any info about this awful attack, they should contact the police.
sarahowen.org.uk
Police say it’s being treated as a hate crime. That form of hatred has names - anti Muslim racism is one, Islamophobia is another.

The impact of this attack will be felt across Muslim communities.

No one should feel fear because of their religion or be targeted in a place of worship.

The two suspects in the arson attack on a mosque in Peacehaven had enough shame to cover their faces with balaclavas.

There were people inside the mosque at the time of this dangerous attack.

It must have been absolutely terrifying. /1

This week’s Small Business Saturday shoutout is for Delikatesy Smaczek on Waller Avenue - a Polish deli with shelves full of yummy treats and essentials. I loved the range of pickles and teas!

We are sickened by the antisemitic terrorist attack on a synagogue in Crumpsall this morning.

We send our condolences to the loved ones of those killed. We are also sending our thoughts and support to Jewish communities here in the UK. [1/4]

We are horrified to learn of the attack at a synagogue in Manchester, especially on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the wider Jewish community who will understandably be feeling deeply concerned during this time.

Wishing the Jewish community in Luton North and the UK a meaningful Yom Kippur - a time of deep reflection and fasting for many Jewish communities.

More than ever, we must fight for our values of tolerance & diversity as black communities face a rise in blatant racism from the far right. From the Windrush Generation to amazing young people, our town & country is all the better for the Black Britons that have for generations called it home.

Today marks the start of Black History Month, a time to commemorate the contributions black people in the Luton and across the UK, and commit to more work to tackle racism and discrimination.

Trigger warning: if you actually care about those affected by baby loss you don't start hassling them in the street about it.
Anti abortion campaign groups have reached a new low - whether you are supportive or not of legal abortion access this kind of behaviour has no place in democracy.

That’s a wrap on my time at #Lab25 🌹

A packed three days in Liverpool, rounded off by a panel with @islamicrelief.bsky.social and @runnymedetrust.bsky.social on the challenges of Islamophobia.

Thank you to everyone who I chatted to the past few days. Already looking forward to next year! 🙏🌹

Strong moment as Keir Starmer calls out the racism we’ve seen in recent weeks and months:

"Labour is proud of Britain's flags but if they are painted alongside graffiti telling a Chinese takeaway owner to 'go home', that's not pride - it's racism."
