Ethnic divisions and political or economic challenges can make it harder to build peace and foster development but history demonstrates that these barriers have been overcome before, and they can be again. Read about Faculty Affiliate @saumjha.bsky.social's research via @voxdev.bsky.social.

Many poor, ethnically divided societies are caught in an ‘ethnic growth trap’, where conflict, low public investment, and political economy dynamics reinforce each other, hindering development.

It’s been a really tough day for anyone with family and friends in South Asia as the lights go out and people appear to be preparing for war. Our dog Kaylo seems to have sensed this and established a new kennel spot under my desk. The chances for miscalculation are just too high.

Looking for a brief break from the news? Please join us in sunny Los Angeles to talk Historical Political Economy! With a lot of history to work with, and great HPE folks, it’s going to be a lot of fun and likely more cheerful than the contemporary version.

Thanks to @chagaiweiss.bsky.social for sharing his recent RCT with us, which showed that receiving investment portfolios in energy markets—especially green energy—can increase belief in climate change, support for climate action, and pro-environmental behavior. Exciting and encouraging results!

Reupping this trade model run on 25% MEX, 25% CAN, and 10% PRC cross sector import tariffs.

Because…they’re back!!!

Lots of takes on new Trump tariffs. Here's a quick general equilibrium analysis.

Grabbed an off-the-self quantitative trade model (multisector armington) calibrated to '22 global trade flows.

Fed in 25% MEX, 25% CAN, and 10% PRC tariffs across sectors.

What happens to U.S. consumer prices? 1/3

Furthermore, these effects appear most pronounced among political partisans, and increase even among those whose investments happen not to do well.
saumjha.bsky.social
Thus trust is not only a cause but can also be an effect of financial market participation.
saumjha.bsky.social
We argue financial markets can allow people to invest in mutually beneficial ways in the endeavors of anonymous others. We show that experimentally assigning individuals to trade in financial markets increases generalized trust by ~6pp or 25%.
saumjha.bsky.social
How can societies increase generalized trust? Trust is crucial for prosperity but varies dramatically & persistently around the world. Yet in an article just out in the JPubEcon, @chagaiweiss.bsky.social Moses Shayo & I show that experimentally varying exposure to financial markets increases trust
