And maybe also "hard to abate but we don't need this industry at this size and intensity". See for example meat production.
helenczerski.bsky.social
“Hard to abate” is the climate wonk’s term for an industry with no immediate route to zero carbon emissions. But I think there’s “hard to abate” & “expensive to abate” & then there’s “it’s just a bit difficult & we can’t really be bothered to abate”. None of this is impossible. We need to *choose*.

Has anyone else been dealing with some serious headline whiplash recently?

Even for those of us who follow #climate and #energy matters closely, it can be hard to know what the hell is going on!

So here's a thread to help climate communicators get a grip on how to deal with this 🧵

I think this is an excellent example of why behaviour change needs legislative/regulatory support, and a cautionary tale for anyone in areas like climate change and active travel hoping that voluntary behaviour change programmes are going to help them achieve the ambitious targets they've been set.

One of my greatest culture shocks when moving from ex-Communist Romania to the UK in the early 2000s was attitudes to women in employment

A short history of destructive Irish storms 🌧️

We can learn from the impacts of past storms to better adapt to the destructive effects of future storms, writes Dr Carla Mateus of ICARUS and the Department of Geography.

The climate scientist's dilemma: I know it's been a dry year and water resources are depleted so rain is good. But, like, it's really wet outside? #StormAmy

I lived in Madrid when Madrid Centro went into effect and it was amazing. I bring it up all the time as an example of the benefits of that kind of policy choice.

Keep this in mind when people claim cars mean business — closing Central #Madrid to cars over holidays resulted in a 9.5% boost in retail spending on its main shopping street: STUDY.

There was also a 71% drop in air pollution.

"In a new report, Future Economy Scotland (FES) said relying on investors such as banks, pension funds and asset managers was wasteful and counterproductive, because their primary concern was making a profit, not tackling the climate or nature emergencies"

Absolutely, happy to chat, it's one if the only bits of the model that I trust to work well all the time haha

From a teaching perspective especially the roles are scientifically spread out. Research-wise it would make for strong collaborations though

Yes, sorry, it's essentially to teach the stuff I can't teach...

Which is an issue as I have a ton of things to do and I'll end up behind and have to academia harder later in the week

A friend was asking if mentoring is actually useful and I've just realised the best way to explain it is that mentoring is training for smashing the patriarchy. #academia

Something you might note about this Nobel Prize article is there's a side bar on women and the Nobel Prize: www.snexplores.org/article/nobe...

Noting how few women have won science prizes.

My editor asked me hey: what are the stats for Black scientists?

There is no sidebar....
What’s so noble about the Nobel Prize?
The Nobel Prize might be the one science prize you’ve heard about. But does it really recognize the most important science?
