Sunday Bonhoeffer Family Day* Edition:

"It is truly amazing how you all always think immediately of everything and also translate this into action. I think in this respect our family is truly something very special, don't you agree?"

After listening to @mchlmorelli.bsky.social and his Personalist Manifesto(s) podcast for almost a year, I finally was able to pick up a work by Jacques Ellul. Happy to see a familiar name near the end!

There is a controversial book about it. Your local library might have it. It's an interesting read.

Sunday Bonhoeffer Olympic edition:

"I suddenly received a ticket for the Olympics and had to go. It was of course quite nice, but I was quite irritated when I thought of how gladly and enthusiastically you would have liked to be sitting here."

A compelling look at a very complex figure that his superiors tried to simplify for their own greed. The man is much more interesting than the monk. (And I like the monk!)

"And now let me wish you and yours a wonderful day. Let each of us wish for the other that as siblings we can remain as close as we have until now. We will doubtless still have great need for each other."

Sunday Bonhoeffer:

"It is infinitely easier to suffer with others than to suffer alone. It is infinitely easier to suffer publicly and honourably than apart and ignominiously."

"Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference."

"A prince can mak a belted knight,
A marquis, duke, an’ a’ that;
But an honest man’s abon his might,
Gude faith, he maunna fa’ that!
For a’ that, an’ a’ that,
Their dignities an’ a’ that;
The pith o’ sense, an’ pride o’ worth,
Are higher rank than a’ that."

"There is so much meanness, selfishness and hatred among the nations of the world but we must overcome it. Against that we know only one mean: keep your eyes open and your hearts."

Sunday Bonhoeffer:

"Thinking and acting for the sake of the coming generation, but being ready to go any day without fear or anxiety - that, in practice, is the spirit in which we are forced to live. It is not easy to be brave and keep that spirit alive, but it is imperative."

The conference was excellent. I really appreciated the presentation by @reggiel.bsky.social and his remarks about how social media shouldn't be totally abandoned. A heartfelt thank you to LAMPa and other organizing partners for holding this event (and making it available online for us far away).

As I read more of the works of both Thomas Merton and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the more I admire their ability to analyze both society and human behaviour within their own historical context.

Some days, the world makes my research emotionally difficult and frustrating.

(For a book written 23 years ago, it is still very relevant.)

Once again, I was the beneficiary of immense kindness from my family this Christmas. I shall hunker down over the snowy winter and pour over them. Danke!

"We have been silent witnesses of evil deeds. We have become cunning and learned the arts of obfuscation and equivalent speech. Experience has rendered us suspicious of human beings, and often we have failed to speak to them a true open word. con't

I just registered for this event. There is a fee (a small one if you take advantage of the early bird deal). I always find Dr.Haynes and Dr.Williams @reggiel.bsky.social interesting and well-informed speakers. I'm looking forward to attending online.

I started the year yesterday with a long snowshoe trek while thinking of this Thomas Merton quote:

"One has to be alone, under the sky, before everything falls into place and one finds his own place in the midst of it all."

Happy New Year to all!!

I'll live these days with you in thought beside me,

It was the perfect day to take my new Christmas present for a spin. Tackled a small hill at the park near my house and some of the urban trails. The snowfall last night helped!
