"Academia" is click-baiting me with an email, claiming my formal interest in architectural motifs is related to recent politics in Hungary and Austria. The algorithm doesn't seem to know me at all (or very well). 👀 🤷 🙃
Email text from "Academia": "You read the paper 'Astragal und Eiförmige Motive auf Stuckdekor der Wandmalerei Sirmiums'. We found a related paper on Academia: 'Soziale Veränderung in der ungarischen und östereichischen Gesellschaft der K(reisky)- und K(ádár)-Ära und Danach' Author Photo Valuch Tibor"

Da schau her: Stellt's Euch vor, beim jetzigen Stand in #Bayern, müsste #Söder nach einer Wahl zurück treten, und an seiner Stelle würde sich #Schwarz-Grün mit Ilse #Aigner als Ministerpräsidentin ausgehen.

Had the pleasure to hang out with some old friends last weekend: Laid-back Faun, Grumpy Medusa, and Queen Apollo say hi. The #Glyptothek café (aka the outdoor office) is still accessible for 1 Euro, much like 25 years ago. The double espresso with ice cube is the lazy Italian's Greek frappé.

... until you realize: the painting is brown in the foreground, cold in the background, following educated convention, rooted in the limits of human imagination – while, in the original experience, nature reveals itself as a bottomless pit of detail. :)

Ich dachte immer die Deutsche Bahn veramtrakt,
aber nun scheint es die Bahn veramericanairlinest.

It's quite ironic to have this discussion, as it resembles conversations I had with European students, with myself making the exact argument you present me with, regarding other "obvious" English slurs.

Please understand that I don't say all this to excuse myself, but to explain why it happened.
schichmax.bsky.social
You are right of course. The museum name is deeply problematic. And I did not say "it's okay". The issue at hand is that Bluesky is a global platform, and "obvious" "even to lay people" is not universal, including foreigners who spent considerable time in the US, including working with Natives.
schichmax.bsky.social
Dear Grumpygirl, this is what I said: No superordinate category, Native, British, Trans, Women, etc. should be used to exclude the voice of a specific person.

The term in question was not obviously a slur, even to those doing due diligence, as the Native museum in DC has it in its name. Yes, shame.

More grace and respect is exactly what I am trying to practice.

This does not mean we have to have the same opinion: I do genuinely believe that Abigail is not a racist, but used problematic terminology out of systemic ignorance, not personal malice.

Please read my thread below Ali's response.
schichmax.bsky.social
In this spirit, I thank you for pointing out to me what was obvious to you. The afterthought, at least in my case, lies in mitigating my ignorance regarding the terminology. Meanwhile, please take my word for this: My respect for Indigenous People, including you, is not an afterthought.
schichmax.bsky.social
Now to bridge the metaphor to our conversation: I have met many students and peers from different part of the world, who were genuinely respectful in their intent and actions, while using offending terminology out of systemic ignorance, not personal malice.
schichmax.bsky.social
What complicates the matter is that mapping our own ignorance is very hard. I say this while mapping mutual ignorance from the multiplicity of opinion in large data is literally my job since 1996. Personally, I observe that the map of my own ignorance grows much faster than what I consider to know.
schichmax.bsky.social
One solution is to adopt a culture of mutual respect where no question is too stupid to ask, where we are all ready to educate each other, even about the seemingly most obvious issues, without prejudice. Moderating such conversation is literally my daily work in multidisciplinary science.
schichmax.bsky.social
Let me try a metaphor: Mutual ignorance is the biggest challenge in multidisciplinary science, as historians, computer scientists, physicists, etc. are mutually unaware, look down, or even hate each other for not knowing common historical terminology, a popular algorithm, or some basic math concept.
