In fairness, we’re all feeling very sensitive about judicial power this fall.

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the horrific October 7 attack.

As we mourn the 1,218 lives lost that day, let us also keep alive the dream of a lasting peace and a better future for all.

Ceasefire now. Every hostage must come home. And a safer world for everyone.

We were thinking "how could you imagine anyone would do such a thing?"; they were thinking "I can totally imagine I would do precisely that thing" (so why would it be fanciful that we would be thinking exactly the same?).

One conclusion I'm drawing is that the ease at which many were able to believe conspiracy theories like Jade Helm stemmed from the fact that they actually were quite taken by it (deployed against others, of course) -- so it made perfect sense to them to assume we'd find it equally alluring.

Now that AI is here, how can mega-consulting firms assure themselves that their overpaid 20-somethings won't use it in lieu of hopping themselves up on Adderall and pulling all-nighters to meet impossible work demands?

It's a crisis, I tell you!
AI Über Adderall
Another day, another AI hallucination story -- this time involving mega-consulting firm Deloitte, which just refunded  a big chunk of change...

Earlier this summer, I presented Textualism Step Zero at the Harvard-Yale-Stanford Junior Faculty Forum

I begin with a confession of my failures and say something about a failure in textualism-hey, and this is different for me-even a way to fix that for textualism!

(How many years ago? It was on Sam Brownback being both the sort of guy who’d block a judicial nominee bc they attended a commitment ceremony of a lesbian friend, and also author a congressional resolution apologizing for segregation and slavery).

Years ago I wrote about how the “genuinely crazy” GOPers were the ones most likely to surprise you precisely bc they’re true believers in something & that something is absolutely not anything that maps onto standard political reality. So they’re much less predictable than a run-of-the-mill GOP pol.

👀 Marjorie Taylor Greene breaks with Republicans on Obamacare funding, saying she’s not a fan of the law but demands action to prevent a premium hike. “I’m absolutely disgusted that health insurance premiums will DOUBLE if the tax credits expire this year.” She says GOP leaders don’t have a plan.

I love it when journalists subtly indicate that Trump is, in fact, a toddler. www.jta.org/2025/10/06/i...
Excerpt reading: "Trump also shared multiple pictures from the weekly Saturday night Tel Aviv demonstration calling for the hostages’ release, which also functions largely as an anti-Netanyahu protest. Trump, who has a longstanding interest in crowd sizes, did not comment on the pictures, but he cited the large numbers of people in the streets in Israel as evidence that Israelis want the war to end during his joint appearance with Netanyahu."

The passage "Trump, who has a longstanding interest in crowd sizes," is highlighted.

I’ll note that while SCOTUS complains lower courts aren’t following its (unreasoned and opaque) shadow docket orders in cases it sees as substantially similar, the Trump admin loves trying to skirt court orders by tweaking one tiny fact and then doing exactly what it was just forbidden from doing.

I remember a study asking Americans their opinion on foreign aid. They thought we spent way too much on it. Then they were asked “ok, as a % of the fed budget, how much should we spend on foreign aid?” and they pitched a number at least an order of magnitude higher than what we actually spent.

Guys, is it a problem when the Diaspora Minister hates diaspora Jews and loves diaspora antisemites?

Oh yes, that’s long been obvious. Evangelicals love Israel (well, fewer now, but you know) and love their own self-created construct of “Jews”, but they detest the actual Jews that actually live here.

Often I give Nathaniel a bottle in his crib before his nap. And usually, he finishes the bottle, puts it down, finds his pacifier (which is in the crib but not handed to him), puts it in his mouth, and then goes to sleep — all on his own.

For some reason, I swell with pride every time he does this.

Bibi had already stated that Israel "has no better friends than US Christian Zionists", so it makes sense that cracks in *that* bloc will be Bibi's main focus. He's already written American Jews off.

This is the end of a long road, but I actually kind of think Israel has given up on being supported by the bulk of diaspora American Jews (outside Orthodox Jews). It's evangelicals or bust; Jews are, at best, annoying gadflies to be a swatted away.

And to close the loop, I think we need to be very sensitive to this implication because there is a long, problematic history where antisemitic resentment breeds from perception of Jews hogging more than their fair share, sucking up the oxygen, demand special perks other groups don't receive, etc.
schraubd.bsky.social
Again, without some implication either that Jews are overprotected or that Jews want to preserve an unjust *disparity* in protection, the "short term" language really makes no sense, which is why I read it as a critique of Jewish choices regarding how they are currently pursuing govt protections.
schraubd.bsky.social
It is not Jews' fault if other groups are underprotected, and enhancing others' protections (without decreasing Jewish protections) would not affect Jews' perception of their safety in the short or long term. But the rhetoric to me implied Jews were responsible for/desirous of the claimed disparity.
schraubd.bsky.social
If we're talking about the substantive level of protections themselves, then Jews do benefit (short and long term). If we're talking about the claim that other groups receive less protections, then Jews don't benefit (short or long term) and I don't know why they'd think they would.
schraubd.bsky.social
I get why a Jew would feel (short or long term) more protected by having enhanced security around their synagogue. I don't get, even in concept, why a Jew would feel (short or long term) more protected by a mosque *not* receiving similar protections, and I don't see such thinking in evidence.
schraubd.bsky.social
Put differently, it doesn't sound like the problem here has much to do with how the UK protects Jews at all. The problem may be what it does for other groups. But the rhetoric implies that Jews feel safer specifically by being *disproportionately* protected, which I don't see in evidence.
