I have finished my postdoc at Microsoft Research and am now an assistant professor at Northeastern University. I had one of the most idealistic academic experiences of my career at MSR. I will miss it dearly, and will carry its interdisciplinary, open, and “weird” spirit wherever I go.

This term students in my Optical Physics course calculated Computer-generated Holograms, of whatever objects they could think of. The one below, when transmitted to a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM), produces a hologram of our school mascot, "Tommy Titan." SLMs can be a great tool for Optics teaching.

Interviewer: Can you explain these gaps in your resume?

Me: Oh that's when the ICPMS plasma shuts off every time the bulk argon tank is filled.

About to take my final for Abstract Algebra (group and field theory).

If this goes well it will be the *last* final I ever have to take.

LET’S GO! 😎

Wow hi new followers! I’m a physics professor and I study black holes. I’m here to talk about teaching, science, marriage, parenting, cooking, dogs, politics, my crumbling old house. I heart dad jokes. Trans rights are human rights, Black Lives Matter, and I abhor violence.

I and other AI experts at Oxford University were asked for our opinions on the UK AI Safety Summit

TLDR it was hype driven, focused on sci-fi scenarios that
1) make the tech sound more impressive and removed from its creators than it is
2) distract from CURRENT issues

Expert comment: Oxford AI experts comment on the outcomes of the UK
Over 2 days, the UK AI Safety Summit brought together approximately 150 representatives from across the globe including government leaders and ministers, and industry, academia and civil society

When I wrote a book on AI in 2019, it focused on AIs making sneaky shortcuts.

Aside from the vintage generative text (Pumpkin Trash Break ice cream, anyone?), the algorithmic shortcutting is still completely recognizable today.

I just got a lot of new mathematician followers, so in my attempt to pander, here’s my area of interest. For the past year, I’ve been translating, solving, and writing detailed solutions for Japanese college entrance exam problems. I even code randomly-generating variants for student practice.

People will find this kind of funny but as a math major, I took a programming class as part of my minor in humanistic studies bc programming wasn’t a part of the pure math curriculum then 😅

Hi followers! I'm Tien Chih and I'm an Assist. Prof of Math at Oxford College of Emory. My research is about the intersections of homotopy theory and combinatorics. Just as importantly, things I'm into are undergrad research, IBL, alt grading, and supporting math teaching with tech.

Could we tell whether anyone in our galaxy uses a warp drive?

This sounds like a crazy question, but it can be answered using numerical GR
