Latest paper led by @mjallen176.bsky.social examining long-term rates of heat-related illness in VA ZIP codes with and without cooling center access.

One line summary: We can't just open a cooling center up and say we've done our job.

A screenshot of the Natural Hazards paper entitled "Evaluating the relationship between heat-related illness and cooling center location in Virginia" by Michael J. Allen, Daniel J. Vecellio, and Jeremy S. Hoffman.

Abstract: Extreme heat contributes to adverse health outcomes and public cooling centers are often used as both a heat-health mitigation and management strategy to protect public health during extreme heat events. While the presence of a cooling center should theoretically improve heat-health outcomes in the surrounding community, there are no quantitative studies evaluating this relationship. Using heat-related emergency department and urgent care center visits from the 2014–2020 summer seasons, this study evaluates the relationship between heat-related illness (HRI) and cooling centers in Virginia. In total, more than 10,000 incidences of HRI occurred over the period across 68% of Virginia ZIP codes as reported. Communities with a cooling center had higher rates of HRI than those without, and this difference was most significant in urban areas. This result was coincident with a significant increase in non-white residents in these ZCTA. Our results draw attention to the need for additional research on the topic of cooling center access, efficacy, and operations. Strategically locating cooling centers near or within vulnerable communities is one just consideration, and more work is needed to uncover if, when, who, and how communities are utilizing, or in many cases not utilizing or unable to utilize, cooling centers.

"Hey, Forrest. Every year, I sit down to watch a season of Penn State football, but it doesn't say not to watch the games against top-10 opponents. But here's the thing. I'm a sucker. Do they expect me to watch top-10 losses year after year? What is that like?"

Also, it's amazing that at this point, it's pretty obvious that Kaytron is the Day 1 talent out of the two RBs which is not something I would have thought 2-3 years ago.

Tre Wallace is the 3rd leading receiver in the SEC this season. Omari Evans doing things in Washington. Penn State paid for a completely new WR core this year and they've not been able to get the ball at all this game.

It's Drew. It's always been Drew and I'm finally coming around to admitting it.

It has been this way for literally 20 years. There has to be some sort of conference edict.

Big Ten refs will never call holding on a Penn State opponent. 1 call on at least 15 holds tonight, even when bear hugs are being applied right in front of referees.
sciencedjv.bsky.social
Would guarantee that refs wouldn't have taken a second look at that play if Whittington broke that tackle and ended up scoring initially.
danieljtgallen.bsky.social
and the call is overturned. officials rule Whittington's knee was down.
sciencedjv.bsky.social
There have been at least 6-8 of those brutal no calls on holds tonight.

Someone needs to give Drew Allan a buzzcut at halftime. The broccoli cut is for children and he's playing like he's in pee-wee out there.
