For those who don’t know me. Here’s a thread.🧵

I was raised by fundamentalist Christian’s who also happened to be anti-vaxx. We also were very poor because my dad left us when I was in late middle school for another woman (a bit counter to the churches teachings but I digress).

A poorly conducted study, submitted as a correspondence, claims to show increased cancer diagnosis one year after Covid-19 vaccination.

In truth, the quality of science in this supposed study was abysmal and filled with major methodological flaws.

Did a Korean study really show that the
COVID-19 vaccine increased the risk of cancer?
Absolutely NOT

The New York Times piece today about US science is terrible and wrong—in many ways.

I could write a whole article about this, but as one example:

“To close observers, the original crisis began well before any of this…”
No. I’m a close observer of science, and this is incorrect.

We need the NIH employees to be able to move on, do their jobs and put resources toward further funding of cancer research and all other funding areas.

To learn more you can also follow @savehealthresearch.bsky.social for more coverage related to this topic.

Also tell them if the Supreme Court issues a stay on APHA vs. NIH, funding across all areas of research will be stalled while NIH wastes an enormous amount of time on paperwork because of this back and forth.

Particularly call and thank these republican senators who have recently urged Vought to release NIH funding:

So what can you do? Share this post and others on the topic. Discuss this issue and the importance of federal funding for science on social media and in your community. And call your representatives. Particularly if you’re in a republican state with republican representatives.

NIH research saves lives and fuels the economy. It’s good for all of us. This back and forth canceling and reinstating grants is a wasting precious time and resources than could be better spent by both NIH employees and researchers.

sciencewhizliz.bsky.social
It is expected that the court will let us know between now and Friday whether or not they are going to grant this stay.

4/n
sciencewhizliz.bsky.social
The government is now seeking to delay enforcement of that ruling by asking the Supreme Court to issue a stay (pausing the lower courts ruling).

This means that they want permission to be allowed to proceed with the grant cancellations.

3/n
sciencewhizliz.bsky.social
Some people/states who had grants cancelled sued the NIH over this decision in a case known as NIH vs APHA. The district court ruled this was illegal. The judge making this ruling this was appointed by Reagan— Judge Young.

This means the grants of the plaintiffs needed to be reinstated.

Earlier this year, many NIH grants were abruptly canceled by the current administration despite covering a wide range of critical health research. This research covered topics ranging from cancer to community health.
