All I'm saying is that when you write "I am alive" on some paper and put it in a photocopier, judging by the output we don't know that there's *not* a very small man in there. And maybe he deserves rights

"A.I." is the tool of and the prevailing aesthetic of fascists leading to a world devoid of meaning or art.

I understand THAT people have decided it's not worth masking any more. But I'll never properly understand why, because I didn't like covid the one time I got it, and I never liked the flu or colds or norovirus when I would get them, and it's good never getting them any more.

Przeworski says it cleanly, clearly, and convincingly.

What then must we do?

The Democratic establishment is clearly betting that Republicans will offer them an electoral victory while they attend the wedding parties of billionaires. The only vision for the Democratic Party originates from its left wing, which is vigorously censured by its mainstream. It may well be that the Democratic leadership is correct in thinking that the best strategy is to do nothing and waiting for MAGA to fail. But this, like MAGA, is a “back again” ideology, one of “restoring” democracy rather than transforming the conditions that generated the present disaster. To restore democracy, it needs to be reformed. This is the project we need.

The thing regular people don’t often grasp about ‘academic freedom’ is that if you don’t allow experts to research & teach in their fields of expertise, guided by their professional judgment & decades of training, you have effectively given up on the concept of knowledge & shut down your university

Universities are moving rapidly to comply with laws that don't exist.

“I’m emotionally shellshocked right now,” said one professor in the Texas Tech system. “What does it say about academic freedom? It says we don’t have it.” The professor spoke by phone from the inside of a car to avoid being overheard by colleagues.

You guys, so many Romance girlies are reading "On Tyranny" that they've broken the Goodreads recommendations algorithm. 10/10; no notes.

A grainy screenshot of the sidebar of the desktop version of Goodreads. It says:

Thanks for this, very much so. We need to say this to and for one another.

Also, I can’t wait to read the book.

On the one hand it feels so, so stupid to be publishing a book right now, but on the other hand, I think: well, books survived the Nazis. It’s something I can put out to remind the world I existed and thought and cared, even if I don’t make it through.

Canada's in a real bind. Our current moment requires a massive increase in state capacity *across the board*. But the Carney government (ie, Mark Carney) seems to be ideologically opposed to a greater role for government outside defence. Ideologies die hard, even when reality is banging at the door.

I am so tired of the scapegoating of higher ed. No group that have had their speech rights more obviously curtailed, by the government, in the couple of years than college students. The govt is engaged in an obvious viewpoint discrimination lawfare campaign against campuses. But it’s not enough!

This is exactly the set of circumstances when we should be putting money into science and innovation. A country right next door to us that has been a leader in science and innovation is throwing it all away - we should be picking up at least some pieces.

What are we doing here? Unfathomable.

I *am*, however, on the committee for this position! I can't really answer any questions about it (there are Rules). But I can say we're casting a very wide net for this one. jobs.utoronto.ca/job/Toronto-...

My department is hiring! I'd be happy to answer any questions (esp. re: "experiential learning"). (I'm not on the search committee.) It's a swell place to work, with excellent colleagues, in a great (if blisteringly expensive) city. North of a particular border. jobs.utoronto.ca/job/Toronto-...

Joseph Weizenbaum said “The myth of technological and political and social inevitability is a powerful tranquilizer of the conscience. Its service is to remove responsibility from the shoulders of everyone who truly believes in it. But in fact there are actors”
The president of the AFT, Randi Weingarten, said in an interview that she’s come to believe that AI will be as transformative as the printing press and that teachers should learn to use it. With limited government support for any large-scale training, she felt she had little choice but to turn to Silicon Valley. “Professional development done by teachers for teachers is actually the best thing to do,” she said, “but where are you going to find that money?” Daaiyah Bilal-Threats, senior director for national education policy at the NEA, characterized her union’s relationships with big tech companies around AI—it has worked with Google too—in part as a chance for teachers to influence product development. “It could be dangerous for them to be developing this technology without educator input,” she said.
