Exactly. Like, I'll take the deductions that make sense based on the way I live my life, but I don't make decisions based on trying to get out of paying taxes. (The price we pay for living in a civilized society and all.) We don't have a lot of investments, etc., so it's basically all just living.

I've been in positions where I could make myself "tax efficient" a few times and I've never hated public services enough to put in the effort that would have been required.

Yeah, a close relative of mine was an accountant with a... let's say, 'knack for creative arithmetic' (to the extent of spending a year inside for getting *too* creative) and they were offering to look at my records to see if there was any advantages I was missing out on. No thanks!

Funny how morality and neurotype work in non-intuitive ways. Had a phone call with my brother the other day, and he was urging me to do various things to make myself more "tax efficient" and I was repulsed.

Wasn't worth it when I started because I was making literally no money, then when I started making real money I was going through a divorce and had to remortgage the house and didn't want to fuck around with my earnings and so on.

Quite. And handily in the UK the taxes support slightly more actual good things like healthcare and slightly fewer forever wars and concentration camps (though not as much of the former or as little of the latter as I'd like).

For an old job I had to sit in on monthly meetings of an estate and tax planning committee. The degree to which it is conventional wisdom among that crowd that anyone who pays what they actually owe in taxes is a sap repulses and horrifies me.

My favourite hits radio station has a feature on the breakfast show where listeners are asked to suggest songs relating to a theme of the day. When the theme was “rap”, the suggestions that the DJ read out - with a completely straight face - were: ‘Rapture’, ‘Chant No.1’ and ‘World in Motion’
