But also it’s scary how quickly we as humans are losing critical thinking (or rather are willingly giving up this skill)

one of the simple examples was to go / gehen - in german it is always associated with a direction (ich gehe.... dahin / nach X) whereas in English it isnt. so using the german version you have to commit to saying where you are going. it was really interesting

but people so willingly giving up on language skills is as sad as people giving up and using ChatGPT for everything. thinking and being able to speak in different languages is so cool

(and yes im digressing from the original point of this discussion)

there was a podcast i heard a while back about how grammar etc influences your thinking and being able to have 2,3 or more options to use a language to address a problem is actually of benefit. in hindsight,it makes sense, and i sometimes talk problems through in different languages to get a solution

if used correctly, maybe thats fine.
but actually german is a really nice language and has lot of nuances to it.

ive interacted with kids who live there but barely speaks german or english properly. their parents say 'oh wow s/he's bilingual' where really they are not fluent in either.

the other day i had to turn off a Zeit podcast as it was just unbearable. i listen to German podcasts for a different angle / to not completely forget German and they just kept using English words in the middle of sentences, but _wrong_ ones.
