Trump just signed an executive order banning vote by mail and ordering the defunding of any state that does not follow through with it as well as engage in massive voter roll purges.

There won't be free and fair elections ever again. If you're waiting for 2026, it's already too late.

A fantastically important postscript to this piece: David Graham asks Jeffrey Goldberg about possible retaliation, and Goldberg gives a perfect answer — with perfect swipes. www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

I gave a talk today to 200 lawyers & judges about how the Nazis brought Germany's once-independent bar to heel in the '30s.

This Trump executive order targeting lawyers came out while I was talking--too late to note to the audience that THEY DID IT LIKE THIS.

The legal profession is actually chock full of public-interest-minded people who have made career choices that helped others but harmed their own career prospects.

I hope lawyers weighing their own next steps will look around and see that.

Do you think you’re safe because you’re a US citizen? What guarantees your citizenship rights? The Constitution, the rule of law, & the institutions that protect them. If the regime breaks that rule of law by deporting non-citizens without trial or due process, defying court order, how safe are you?

“[S]ince Orange’s novel became a mainstay of the Millennium Art curriculum, pass rates for students taking the Advanced Placement literature exam have more than doubled. Last year, 21 out of 26 students earned college credit….The majority of them, said Ouimet, wrote about ‘There There.’”
Of all the classroom visits the author Tommy Orange has made since “There There” came out in 2018, the one at a Bronx high school earlier this month was “the most intense connection I’ve ever experienced.”
A Bronx Teacher Asked. Tommy Orange Answered.
When the author received an impassioned email, he dropped everything to visit the students who inspired it.

My latest @slate.bsky.social, on how red state legislatures want to use their preemption power to gut local crim legal reforms … and some thoughts on why the threat may not (or may! It’s confusing!) be as serious as some (like me!) have suggested.
This Poses an Existential Threat to Criminal Justice Reform
States have used this power aggressively since George Floyd’s murder.
