Received my own email yesterday morning informing me that the program I was to participate in this summer had their NEH funding terminated.

Even if funding is restored in future (generally), how could you ever trust that it won’t be immediately rescinded again without cause?
Pour one out tonight not only for the thousands of fantastic scholars whose NEH grants were wrongly terminated, but also for all of the junior scholars who have never—and now may never in their lifetimes—receive federal support for their research

When scholars of authoritarianism and fascism leave U.S. universities because of the deteriorating political situation here, we should really worry.

Aside from the general lack of transparency, the “bold action” here involves zero direct or collective response to the attack on universities themselves.

For folks who don’t know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.

These arguments that Trump/the administration have lost the plot ask the wrong questions about the state of America right now. They presume Trump is some irrational actor, rather than asking who benefits or what the goals might be outside of just simple economic growth.

it is grimly hilarious that, given the immense, decades-long fetishization of "leadership" and "leadership skills" in business-oriented academia and politics, even unto the formation of leadership institutes, there should turn out to be no leaders in any positions of power

That Taylor Greene and Boebert are the face of the Republican Party is important for 2 reasons:
1) Surely the path forward for Ds is to move left (as the Rs moved right) to capture “new” voting blocs.
2) The Ds, as they currently exist, aren’t a party of opposition. They haven’t kept apace.
