The Sedimentary Systems Group at FU Berlin studies how climate change & tectonic activity reshapes Earth’s surface by combining geomorphology and sedimentology to trace sediment & biomarkers from mountain rivers to the deep ocean. Lead: Anne Bernhardt

Just out in Science Advances with @topotoolbox.bsky.social:
Submarine canyons preferentially form where the seafloor is steepest—not where rivers bring much sediment. Our global study reveals what controls canyon distribution and the world’s oceans.

Seafloor slopes control submarine canyon distribution: A global analysis
Submarine canyon distribution is driven by slope inclination, linking tectonic and thermal forces to canyon formation.

Everyone should watch this. I haven't seen anyone else in the U.S. laying this playbook out so clearly.

#StaceyAbrams explains how to achieve an #autocracy in 10 steps.

We're at step 9.

The military is in our streets. Is our democracy worth the effort to defend it?

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to study submarine faults "just offshore". The postdoc will participate in all steps of the research from the development of an autonomous kayak w/ sonar to the analysis of bathymetric data for active tectonics. 📆 22 June!

Fun first day at #INCISE2025 - #submarinecanyons symposium!
Amazing venue at ICM-CSIC in Barcelona, stunning views, and a hands-on workshop on deep-sea structure-from-motion. Bonus: piloting a mini-ROV to 3D map the pool floor!

Vielen Dank fürs Teilen! 🙌

As a former international grad student in the U.S., I see this with deep horror. I feel such sorrow—for the international students affected and for the intellectual loss to Harvard and the US. Nothing great can come from it.

What do tax cuts for the rich do?

They increase inequality.

They have no effect on economic growth or unemployment.

"Our results provide strong evidence against the influential political–economic idea that tax cuts for the rich ‘trickle down’ to boost the wider economy."

Will be teaching 4th semester BSc students about the beauty of sedimentary structures next Monday. Look at these wonderful flame structures in Miocene turbidites from the Austrian Molasse Basin!

The NSF funding cuts are a disaster for science and society - globally! Slashing support for research means fewer innovations, less climate resilience, and a blow to education. We need investment in knowledge, not cuts. #FundScience #NSF #ScienceMatters #ResearchCrisis
