This. This was the formative event of my generation & our entire politics in 🇺🇸. The structural break after which we were no longer a full democracy, when 5 Wizards In Robes decided they were a super-legislature & counting all the actual votes didn’t matter. The rest has been 25 years of commentary.
25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

Staggering burned and blinded through the bombardment of images that perfectly encapsulate the collapse of American capitalism that the parking lot of a derelict Bed Bath & Beyond as boneyard for unsold cybertrucks barely registers.
A visit to the Elephant Graveyard of West Bloomfield, Michigan: unsold Cybertrucks piling up in the parking lot of a closed Bed, Bath, & Beyond about a mile south of the Tesla dealer.

really just think of an abandoned unsold cybertruck parked in front of a dead mall as being akin to a whalefall. pile of expensive, valuable resources fallen somewhere lightless where it could, perhaps, support a whole ecosystem of weird freaks

Trump being in the position he’s in is a pretty damning testament to the business leaders and tech-bro billionaires who claim to care about the future.

There is no future with Trump. They know it, they’re just scarred shitless what will happen to their empires if they speak up. Fucking cowards.

"Appropriate" protest to those defending the status quo; is anything that is easy to ignore. Once the acts cannot simply be looked away from, then the cause is no longer "being civil" in their opinion.

It doesn't matter what we do in the cause of liberation, we will always be called violent, terrorists, & more. Rather than solely trying to disprove these accusations, we have to articulate why we *are* justified to act in ways which upset those in power & damage property.

Been thinking a lot lately about the morals of Jesus of Nazareth.

As a tan man from the Middle East, if Jesus were an undocumented American immigrant, I wonder if angry mobs would get ICE to deport him — especially for speaking out against greed and advocating for the poor.

the fundamental problem with these people (not jonathan) is that they don’t seem to believe in anything. if you’re willing to sacrifice one of the foundational rights of constitutional government on the altar of “buh this might not be popular” then what won’t you sacrifice?
If you think you can't make a political issue out of "people shouldn't be grabbed off the street and put in a foreign gulag forever," maybe consider getting out of politics/punditry. And these aren't technical slogans: they appear in the Declaration of Independence and in the Constitution (twice).

If someone says "I can't do [thing]", and you want to help them, the correct response is not "I will help you become able to do [thing]", it is "I will help you become able to accomplish your goals without needing to be able to do [thing]".

I don't care whose house it is, I care whose *home* it is. Landlord rights is some colonizer bullshit: "Yes, you may be the ones who live here, but I have this flag (paper from a bank), and that makes the land mine and I get to decide how you live on it." Fuck you.

A thought experiment:
Say "40 year olds are not kids". Then say "39 year olds are not kids" then "38 year olds are not kids".
Continue until the statement makes you uncomfortable, then ask yourself why declaring that age to be "not kids" makes you uncomfortable, but the age one number higher didn't.

Finding meaning in suffering is a scam to avoid the work of preventing it. Suffering never means anything, it just sucks, always, and we should be doing everything in our power to eliminate it wherever it exists.
