@aclu.org Flashing the Batsignal your way. Maybe there’s, I dunno, a lawsuit you could perhaps file regarding this type of discrimination?

You’ve gone viral on r/Asheville. This no-locals policy doesn’t seem to be unique to Asheville, though it’s still dependent on a number of factors. www.reddit.com/r/asheville/...

Hampton Inn it is.
When elected president, my administration will federalize one chain of hotels to be used as sliding-scale housing for the unhoused and housing insecure.

Hotel staff will immediately be instated as government employees, and provided green cards where necessary. The voters will choose which chain.

I’m sorry, they BAN people that live within 50 miles? They do not ever want locals celebrating anniversaries or having staycations?

What the actual heck? And if a homeless person can afford their hotel, they refuse service?!? Absolute GHOULS

Plenty of posts on the AVL subreddit about this, though I’ve no idea how they handled it after Helene.

a policy I came across recently at one of our cheaper downtown motels was that you couldn’t pay by debit card over the phone for someone else.

of course I was trying to book a room for unhoused friend ahead of a storm.

they refused to explain why that was the policy, but I know why.

We are in a Post-Customer world now. Having the money to buy something is no longer good enough, now corporations can simply decide: nah you’re just not good enough for our shareholders

I’d like to be a fly on the wall at Hampton Inn’s corporate offices when they realize that one of its branches just unlawfully denied a NYT-published reporter on homelessness a stay due to some nebulous pseudo-official policy about “homelessness.”

Since some people have questioned whether this really happened—or whether such a policy actually exists—here's an auto-generated transcript (with errors) from the voicemail canceling our reservation, and a sign posted next to the front desk when we arrived.

And to those scoffing at the idea that homeless people stay in hotels: when shelters are full, local agencies regularly place clients in hotel rooms. Many unhoused individuals also have jobs and cycle between hotels, cars, friends' apartments, and the street.

To clarify, the hotel flagged my old Asheville address because it was still associated with my Hilton account (I used points to book the room).

What was most chilling about this exchange was the sheer casualness of "because of our homeless population," as if those experiencing homelessness were *obviously* people to be kept out.

So if you're a family evicted from your apartment, or a mother fleeing domestic violence with her children, or someone unhoused trying to get off the street or out of their car for a night... you're not allowed to stay at these Asheville hotels.

Just unabashed discrimination.

A Hampton Inn in Asheville just canceled my family's reservation because our address (incorrectly) showed Asheville—and the hotel bars locals within 50 miles.

When I asked why, they said, "because of our homeless population," adding that most hotels here have similar policies.

This is outrageous.
