Experienced an earthquake a few minutes ago. Aftershocks are still coming, some strong and some are alright but felt.

Apparently the epicenter is around mag. 7 and our region is feeling around mag. 5 🥲

It so was hard to imagine having successful career in science as a disabled PhD student that eventually I just left.

Who could have guessed that years later I would help create a magazine issue dedicated to highlighting Trailblazing disabled chemists!

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan just before midnight on August 31st. Vulnerable homes built of mud, brick, stone, and wood collapsed; the reported death toll has exceeded 800 people.

Why do earthquakes occur here, what happened in this one, and why was it so deadly?

Around 11:30 am local time, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the offshore Kamchatka region at a depth of about 20 kilometers. The subduction zone quake caused severe shaking on the Kamchatka peninsula and triggered tsunami warnings and advisories around the Pacific. (1/n)

The mainshock is marked by a bright blue star. Smaller quakes are marked by circles that scale with magnitude and are color coded by age in days. Credit: Temblor
