In '24, NYC's greenhouse emissions dropped to levels not seen since '20, during the COVID pandemic. The declines were due to higher energy efficiency, including in cars; phase-out of fuel oil in buildings; and EV growth. Buildings' emissions have fallen 27% since '05.

The Dept of the Interior will open 13.1 mn acres of fed land for coal mining and lower royalty rates for extraction. The Dept of Energy will also invest $625mn in the industry. Two coal plants must be retired weekly, globally, by 2040 to not exceed 1.5C.

BP withdrew its application on 12/1 for a blue-hydrogen project at Teeside, located in the UK. A competing data center at the site, sailing through the approval process, contributed to the decision; but, industrial consumers' pared-down or delayed decarbonization plans finally derailed the project.

A draft of the COP30 deal omitted fossil fuels, entirely dropping a range of options that were included previously. Options were non-starters for petro-states. COP deals must be approved unanimously (i.e., among almost 200 nations at COP30) for adoption. #greenslack

Residents of Salisbury, MD are suing Perdue Agribusiness over contamination caused by its soybean plant. Wastewater-containing lagoons at the plant are leaking while discharge from the facility seeps into streams and PFAS in excavated soil leaches into groundwater.

Saudi Arabia's Aramco is set to enter 2 US LNG supply deals with Woodside Energy and Commonwealth LNG when the kingdom's Prince bin Salman visits D.C. the week of 11/16. Aramco will buy a stake in Woodside's LA project. LNG capacity is set to double in the US by 2030.

PA will no longer seek membership in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The initiative caps emissions and mandates power plants in Northeastern member states to purchase allowances to release CO₂. PA Republicans opposed RGGI from the start. #greenblock

The EU Parliament approved a plan to cut emissions 90% by 2040—and outsource 5% of that target to countries outside the bloc, via carbon credits—on 11/13. The plan falls short of the target 90% cuts, without carbon offsets, that would constrain warming to 1.5C.

According to the IEA, fossil-fuel use could peak by 2030. Coal use is at or close to its peak, while oil and gas's peak would follow in the decade after. Nuclear, solar and wind will surge in the interim. The peak has been delayed by the shift in US policy.

Greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 34% since 1995. Despite years of summits emissions have climbed by 33% since the 1st COP 30 yr ago. Demand for coal will remain near record highs through 2027. Anything above 1.5C will be disastrous for small, island nations.

Zohran Mamdani is the mayoral-elect of NYC (our city ;-)). What are climate threats for the city? By 2080, many areas will face an increased risk of tidal flooding with rising sea levels. Neighborhoods will become vulnerable to extreme rainfall. Let's tackle this.

This is the status of climate lawsuits against the Administration. Of the 38 cases, the majority, 24, face pending rulings. Three have been won by climate activists while another 3 were wins for the Administration. Energy and fed grants are 2 issues at stake.

Melissa rapidly intensified into a hurricane, bearing down on the Caribbean. It may become a Cat 4 or 5 with at least 150-mph winds. Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba will be most impacted. Parts of Jamaica will get up to 25" of rain. Deadly landslides are also expected.
