Day 23 #SciArtSeptember prompt scouting: Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska (1925-2015) a Polish #paleobiologist, famous for a series of Polish-Mongolian expeditions she lead from 1963-1971 to the Gobi desert! 🐡🧪👩🏼‍🔬⚒️ #histsci There she discovered dinosaurs including the Deinocheirus, plus she & team found the 🧵
My linocut portrait of Zofia Kielan-Jaworowska shows her as in slacks and sleeveless button down with collar turned in a 3/4 view with her right arm extended and left arm bent and resting on the small of her back. She has short hair and appears brightly lit from the left side. In front of her are the Fighting Dinosaurs fossils: a protoceratops and velociraptor entwined. Above her hand is a Cretaceous rodent Catopsbaatar and behind her is a Deinocheirus dinosaur. She is in the field in Mongolia with mountains in the distance. The print is made in a gradient of sandy golden green through dark green-brown through a dark rust from the bottom to the top.

imagine if a family of beavers randomly showed up right now and finished whatever thing you've been putting off
In early 2025, beaver activity in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area, Czech Republic, contributed to the restoration of a wetland ecosystem. A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that coincidentally accomplished environmental goals of the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million,

Despite global challenges for women in STEM, there are local wins to celebrate.

Across the EU, women made up 42.5% of STEM graduates in 2021, with even higher representation in countries like Romania and Poland. 🇪🇺

Let's keep empowering #WomenInScience! 👩‍💻

📊 Eurostat
Bar chart showing percentage of women graduating in STEM fields across EU countries in 2021. Romania leads at 42%, while Belgium has lowest at 27%. EU average shown in teal at 32%. Small illustration of woman with laptop in top right. Eurostat source and International Women's Day hashtag at bottom.

The Koala Lemur, Megaladapis edwardsi. This adorably goofy squatty body was by far the largest lemur to ever exist. They were likely driven to extinction a mere 500 years ago on a rapidly changing Madagascar. On display at the Paris Gallery of Paleontology and Comparative Anatomy. #FossilFriday

More than 46 million years ago, when lush and humid forests covered much of North America, lemur-like primates lived among the trees. This form is called Smilodectes, part of an extinct primate group known as adapiforms. Smilodectes ate leaves and moved like lemurs do today, clinging and leaping. 🧪
