Among a certain sect of DC fans – often female, queer, and active on online fandoms from Tumblr and the like – Young Justice is basically the DC ur-text. I say that with such authority because it was my own experience, and Young Justice was one of the first DC series I read in full as a sixteen-year-old in 2011, nearly ten years after the series ended. I discovered comics for the first time with the help of Tumblr masterposts and Wikipedia deep dives, and fell into a deep, abiding obsession with DC in particular. Despite that obsession, it was not easy learning how to “read” DC history. It was not natural, and the knowledge was not ingrained, other than perhaps the basic secret identities and Justice League characters. To the me of 2011, Doiby Dickles existed, contextless, in the vacuum of YJ. How would I know otherwise?

This is a great piece. Scott Pilgrim is a more ambiguous and thorny work than it usually gets remembered as, and its choice to have the protagonist also be, in many ways, synonymous with its villain pays real dividends. (Prescient ones, as Steve points out.)

As we reach the final volume of the series, however, it becomes increasingly apparent that we're not meant to idolise or even like Scott as a character; he repeatedly overlooks what's happening around him because he's so obsessed with his own little life. His friends break up, make up, leave the country, join his band, and Scott doesn't notice it happen. Overtly, the series turns on him, and shows how the portlandia cuckoo land of his head is a mirror preventing him from seeing anything other than himself.

Really, the only reason Scott is a hero for us is because he's in a video game narrative. O'Malley gamifies his comic, splitting six volumes into seven "boss fights" which find Scott battling against Ramona's exes in turn. They're called "evil exes", because from Scott perspective they're the ones blocking him from what he wants: the cute girl he likes. Again, there's not a huge amount of reason for Scott to be particularly invested in a relationship with Ramona - they have a weirdly frosty chemistry across the entire series - but he's on a quest and protagonists have to accomplish their quests. We go on that journey with him the same way we follow playable characters as we play video games. At the end of the day, we are them, so we're defaulting to finding them heroic.
