/4 Sorry, forgot one: the value system “what I really want is power, so I will do whatever the howling void of narcissism dudes want to get it.”

/3 Then there’s the value system “what’s on TV?” Or “how am I going to make rent this month and if I miss another day of work because the baby’s sick I will get fired and we’ll be living in my car.”

These value systems don’t have worthwhile “debates” over “policy.”

/2 Another value system is “we want to destroy government, destroy universities, destroy American leadership, destroy modern American society.”
Another value system is “I am a howling void of reactive narcissism and petulance with no values at all,” like Trump and Musk.

It's been a long time since I read the Meditations, but as I recall it was mostly Marcus Aurelius writing *to himself* about how much he didn't want to be emperor and was inventing a new philosophy of self-hatred to cope. "Life is bearable if you never feel anything" just isn't healthy.

If I had a nickel for every white guy I met in college who was in love with stoicism because they skimmed an article on it and thought,

"Suddenly, my pathological fear of expressing or interrogating my emotions isn't a problem, but a philosophy that makes me better than you!"

I could pay rent.

Genuinely, we owe that man so much.
I'm so, so glad I found Pratchett in my teens, or I might have been the same way.
