Labour, food (in)security, health, inequality
The goal is to provide an assessment on the current state of climate science, climate change impacts, and strategies for mitigation and adaptation. The challenge is to ensure that the most robust scientific information is available for climate policies.

Super excited (and slightly nervous) to be at at my first @ipcc.bsky.social Lead Authors’ meeting. We are starting our journey to synthesise and evaluate the latest scientific evidence for AR7.

A fantastic #EAERE2025 in Bergen! Great to meet friends and colleagues, & learn about all the cool research!

Special shoutout to Garima Jasuja & Lucia Letsch for their amazing work!

Grateful to Silvia Bertolin & Veronica Vidotto, and all the organisers.

A beautiful city with sumptuous food!

Great discussing worker protection in a warming world with key stakeholders from trade unions, local & regional government, academia, physiologists, private sector, & charitable sector @gsos-lse.bsky.social @granthamlse.bsky.social roundtable!

Always great to work with @profejzrobinson.bsky.social.

The labour impacts indicator by Prof @profejzrobinson.bsky.social & me is featured on the #EEA European Climate and Health Observatory!

Findings clearly show non-linear impact of temperature on working hours. Losses in Cent-East, West, & Southern (large) Europe but gains up North.
December 20, 2024 at 10:25 AM
1/n In the 2024 @LancetCountdown #SIDS report, Prof @profejzrobinson.bsky.social & I track the impact of increasing frequency of #heatwaves & #droughts on access to food, through impact on crop yields, disrupted supply chains & price stability.
December 11, 2024 at 9:40 AM
5/n But there is already insufficient adaptation.

There are also limits to adaptation, & some adaptation strategies such as shifting working hours to the evening/night can expose workers to other negative health impacts, such as vector-borne diseases & disrupted sleep patterns.
November 21, 2024 at 2:13 PM
3/n Heat stress affects the health of workers through physiological and behavioural responses.

In extreme cases, heat stress can lead to worker deaths: nearly 10,000 workers are estimated to die every year in the Gulf countries due to heat stress.
November 21, 2024 at 2:13 PM
2/n This is the first comprehensive review to explore explicitly the extent to which heat stress affects different components of the labour force – labour supply, labour productivity, and labour capacity, and the corresponding occupational health and economic impacts.

1/n In the 2024 @LancetCountdown, Prof
@profejzrobinson.bsky.social & I track the impact of increasing frequency of #heatwaves & #droughts on access to food.

Compared to 1981–2010 baseline, increased heatwave & drought frequency resulted in an additional 151 million people being food insecure.

5/n Considerable spatial heterogeneity in projections

S. Arabia, Chad, Kuwait & Burkina Faso projected to experience the highest increases in child mortality in the mid-term.

Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, Mali & Mauritania likely to experience the highest increases in long term.
July 2, 2024 at 7:24 AM
4/n We compute #policyrelevant projections of child health using #CMIP6 warming scenarios

Results show clear global health co-benefits of low emission scenario mitigation strategies

Stark difference between Paris Agreement target scenario & near-catastrophic scenarios.
July 2, 2024 at 7:21 AM
2/n Non-linear, convex relationship between temperature & child health

Outcomes are minimised at 16.7-18.9°C.

Temperatures in Tunisia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ethiopia, Uganda & Kenya are already beyond this range

Higher frequency of heatwaves & drought worsen child health.
