You might enjoy something I wrote about this, when Marianne Faithfull died, and how I accidentally saw her and a range of icons for £20 at a time when I survived on mung beans and lived in a house with no windows downstairs

One more thought - one of the issues with the whole story in the first place is that the hacking scandal felt very unreal and distant until we learnt what happened to the Dowler family. And the drama suffers from that too. Which is not to deny the harm done to people like Sienna Miller is horrendous

I know why they did it this way - goes back to what I said before. It’s hard to dramatise a journalistic investigation. It needs the fourth wall breaking narration to make sense of it all.

But as a drama to provoke empathy & outrage… it inhibits that because you’re distracted by the style.

I can understand why The Hack has not sparked a public response like the post office ITV drama did. It’s too stylised, too much fourth wall breaking, why the mariachi band?

The Morgan/cop storyline feels authentic and human, in the way the Horizon tv series did. The journalism storyline not so much

After having nightmares last night due to reading Martha Gellhorn can I get some recommendations for big plotty meaty but escapist (not fantasy) novels?

In the vein of Cazalets or Neapolitan or Mantel - character and plot driven where you lose yourself in the reading.

I know plenty of politicians 'working classify' their backgrounds, but this from Jenrick is taking the piss.

His father's linked in is here: uk.linkedin.com/in/bill-jenr...

He was a managing accountant who ended up as the Managing Director of Cannon Industries

She is willing to remove the "distraction" of a Ukranian flag in the council chamber if that is what it takes to refocus colleagues to "get our backyard in order before we look at foreign wars in countries thousands of miles away," she told the BBC.
